Power Abusers

Eggfaced.

He clearly saw an opportunity to get his own back on the public in general since you can't typically speak freely to abusive and insulting people while on the job.

But with you scrambling along and the train about to leave he wanted to get some quality gloating in the face of someone who can't do anything about it and got the egg ready.

Witnessed a similar-ish thing on the tube a while back.
Very crowded Bond St at rush hour with everyone trying to get in via the two open ticket turnstiles on the right. The one(s) on the left were for exit and there were a group of staff on the other side of the barrier.
One of them (looked like a greasier, rattier, skinnier version of Ron Jeremy with a soul-glo perm) decided to use his card to open the gate for a woman, but then immediately locked it off for the next person that tried to go through and tried to be a smartarse by pointing at the display that now said 'Exit' or 'No entry' and giving all the "what does that sign say"? douchery.

Anyway, I called him a **** and all he could do was look at the floor in shame.

Tbh, while it's no excuse, I'm not surprised that people end up doing things like this after having to work with the public for a certain amount of time. Then again, there are also those that are just ****s to start with...

This is where you grab your mobile & point it at the offender, even if it's not on.
They think they're recorded & may behave from now on, under the presumption that the offended is calling the bosses on this with a picture of the person that did it.

Shame, usually find the guards on GWR/FGW okay. Crosscountry on the other hand...

To balance it, was late for a train from Swindon recently (it was just me late on foot, the connecting service from Paddington had already left). By the time I got to the ticket gates I had about 30s and couldn't have made it, but a member of staff asked if I was for the 2152 Chelt and said he'd radio for them to hold the train if I ran. They did hold it and the guard let me in through the cab. We left 4 mins late and arrived 4 mins late... For once a train was late because of me! Although they're more flexible on the branch line services than on the mainline where timing is more important.

Had a similar incident at Bristol Parkway last year.

We had to get off the train we were on for reasons I can't remember and in the excitement I left my jacket on the train.

I realised what I'd done and asked the guy on the platform if I could get it. He flatly refused, I was pretty much pleading with him, he continued to refuse. The train didn't move for good while and I'm pointing to my jacket saying "It's just there on the seat"

The amount the time it took to argue, the train not moving for a good 5 minutes or so, he could have let me back on or he could have jumped on and grabbed my jacket for me but just refused.

Not proud of it but I lost I feces with him and was asked to leave the station. My GF wasn't amused. :(

The thing is, someone on that train could've missed their next train/bus/whatever because the train was held late for you. It's of course nice the guard did that for you, but potentially less so for the passengers who needed the train to go on time.

Possibly, it was the station staff and the guard who made the call though. It's probably because there aren't (m)any useful connections at that time of night which you could make with that service - you'd stay at Swindon for Bristol/S. Wales. Late night Chelt trains are mostly used as a connection from Paddington. In fact, I've rarely seen them not hold the train if the connection from Paddington is running late, so it's regularly delayed. It saved me a 1hr 40 wait for the next train, so I thought it was a decent enough gesture.

I wouldn't expect it on any of the mainline services where they do need to be on time to make connections though.

An entirely fair point. More rural services I suppose will always be given more leeway.

That kind of thing definitely wouldn't have happened up North. Mostly because we don't have a fantastic contactless 24 hour public transit system.

Some people are just miserable, petty little ***** who think it's a virtue to snark at people when they think something's that person's fault.

I'm referring to all those posting about it's your fault for being sleep deprived and you deserve it for getting off at the wrong station, of course. Though the guard is one, too. ;)

Nor do we for the most part. :(

It's unprofessional of the guard, though I can understand the pain of working with the general public a lot of the time.

If he left on time and knew there was another coming right along shortly then that's pretty funny.
I'd be wound up at the time though!
