Power consumption/efficiency - LCD vs 'Old CRT'

Our old 32" Sony Wega CRT used 112W when in use.

Of more interest to me personally was the power consumption in standby. I've always maintained that all this talk of appliances (especially older ones) using significant amounts of power whilst in standby (and hence all the "switch it off" campaigns) was utter garbage and my tests bore this out. 1W ! Yes a single watt was consumed by my eight year old TV whilst in standby.

As for current TV's, be aware that Plasmas consume a lot more power than LCDs and LCDs' consumption is hugely dependent on the backlight level.

Will plasma screens even survive many more years if their power comsumption realy is that high? The world seems to be going more and more 'green', or at least aiming too, and all technology has its limits on how far power conservation can be taken, so i would assume plasma TVs wont be 'green' enough even with modern production methods to get high sales.

Plasmas are doomed now that LCD is available in larger sizes. Power hungry, short lived & prone to screen burn, not a lot going for them !

lcd's burn too, plasmas have a better picture than lcd's. A plasma use's about 80% of the power of a crt 32" and lcd's use less but can't rember the figure

They don't burn like plasmas, 10 mins is enough to burn one. I think a 48" plasma uses around 500 Watts, they sure do radiate some heat & some have fans in them to lose some of it more quickly. Not sure about plasma having a better picture though, LCD has come along a lot lately, you no longer have to sit dead in front now, before you did or the display was dark.

Off on a tangent, I've plugged a CRT monitor in to a mains strip in a cabinet before and the resulting power spike has been enough to trip the breaker and take down all the servers in the rack

The power consumption was probably towards the top end of the allocated amount but still, I've never seen this with an LCD, but have seen it several times with a CRT.

LCD displays do not have screen burn, they have pixel persistence which at first LOOKS like the same thing but isn't. If you leave the screen off for a few hours or display a single colour screen then it resets those pixels back to normal even if the same image was left on the display for hours/days on end.

There is no fix for screen burn on a Plasma or CRT though.

You wait and see, in a few years time the market will be 95% LCD with Plasma consigned to the very high end niche for those willing to spend thousands for the best black levels.

Now this is something that is doing my head in at the moment.

I'm contemplating between a 42" Plasma or a 37" LCD. Both are the same price give or take a tenner.

well it would sound like the plasma has more chance of burning in though 10 minutes is a little exagerated, though apparently on those early Plasma's that wouldn't be an exageration. But power wise, you'll save far more than £10 over the time you have it and people will be wary in 4-5 years of buying a 2nd hand plasma for power/green reasons aswell as fear of burn in. So the LCD should hold its value far more for resale if you choose to upgrade at some stage.

my parents live on a council estate in a house they bought does that make them chavs or something your posh git?

i was raised on a council estate as i suspect other members of this forum were and guess what? we have a lovely childhood and a good upbringing.

I was brought up in a council house by my single mother (a situation she was in through no fault of her own), she claimed benefits but also worked, we never had such luxuries as 32" LCD televisions... in fact the back door was rotten and my bedroom window was badly cracked and let an awful draft in (the council took their time dealing with the door and never sorted out the window). Meh.

If you have purchased a Plasma TV in the last year or so screen burn and longevity of the panel is no longer an issue. The recent Panasonic models are fanatic, better than any LCD in its price range. I'd still say you'd need to be slightly more careful when using a Plasma than an LCD for the first few hours of use, but generally its not an issue any more.

At least get your facts straight before you post mindless drivel.

Hi there,

It wasn't his post in particular that irked me, more the generally perpetuated myth that council estates are full of awful parents that chain smoke, only eat ready meals and swindle benefits to afford expensive electronics and Sky TV.

No, it was you who decided that he was suggesting that, because you clearly have a complex about your up-bringings. He was simply talking about how cheap electronics were
