Hi all.

My PowerDVD 7 Ultra has worked fine for ages. Now it won't play any HD-DVDs.
When i put one in the drive, the autorun loads up but the only option is to open as a file.

Then when you try to play it in PowerDVD, it starts to spin up, but then PowerDVD just closes.

Can anyone help please?

I have updated the drive and software fully.

Blu-rays are working fine.

sorry, don't know what the problem could be, i've got version 7 (a bundled version with my LG blu-ray player) and don't have any issues, do you have any image mounting services or drive emulation services running or anything like that? have you tried some old HD DVD movies? any more info you can give us may help

Nope nothing like that.

Just reinstalled Windows and it is still doing it
I watched a blu-ray about 3 days ago fine.

Can't believe i just reinstalled windows and nothing changed :(

It is PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra that was bundled with my LG GGC-H20L Super Multi Blue

In My Computer, it looks like HD-DVDs are just being recognised as files, whereas Blu-rays are working.

Just tried a DVD and that works fine too.

OK, does anyone know of a decent piece of software that will play HD DVDs so that i can rule out PowerDVD as the problem.

I am thinking that it is a driver issue as it knows there is a disk in there and you can see what is on it, it just doesn't seem to know what a HD-DVD is

Hmmm. Now using ArcSoft TMT 3, the HD DVD is working.

I wonder why it isn't working with PowerDVD even though nothing changed and i even reinstalled it off of the disk

Don't think the sound is working using TMT3 though

Edit: Says that the Dolby codec isn't available in the trial, and obviously pretty much everything uses Dolby so i won't be able to listen to it until i buy the full version, correct?

Yup, I found that a problem with TMT 3 trial that you dont get really a full trial.

I bought the product in the end and have found it to be excellent for watching Blu Rays.

You need an old version of PowerDVD 7, and some files from the beta that allow HD playback. Though if you update you break the HD-DVD playback. But if you don't update, you won't be able to play some new Blu-Rays, eg Star Trek. Maybe you could get round it by having an old PowerDVD 7 installed, and also PowerDVD 9 at the same time. Don't know if that is possible though.

I've had problems with HD-DVD's and PDVD 7 in the past. Newer versions tend to break the support for HD-DVD. Normally if I uninstall PDVD through the control panel and reinstall an earlier version it mends the situation. If you have tried this already then this could indicate you have another problem e.g. something else is corrupted - other media programs are the usual culprits, I've lost DVD support in the past when iTunes got corrupted. You need to stay on PDVD 7 if you want to keep HD-DVD support "out of the box". (There are hacks to resinstate HD-DVD support with later versions I think).

You could try an earlier system restore before reinstall.

I know it's locking the door after the horse has bolted, but I always keep a reasonably uptodate system image of my HTPC (e.g. True Image) since it's very easy to b#gger up your settings - especially with Blu-Ray support.

Thanks for the tips. Tried pretty much everything that has been suggested (restores etc).
Just installed the trial of TMT3 and the HD-DVD worked so i know that it was PowerDVD 7 thats the problem. So just going to shop around for TMT3.

Can i only get this direct from ArcSoft and it the highest package the only one that has full support for everything (TMT3 Platinum)

Thanks

I bought mine from the Arcsoft website as a digital download.

I thought some of the big etailers stocked it as well but just had a quick look around and couldn't find it.

Platinum is the version you'll need if you want to play Blu Ray disks according the the information on their website and that's the version I bought.
