Does anyone make good silencing kits for HDDs? Sort of like the coolermaster silent drive thingy. HDD is the noisiest thing in my HTPC so it needs muting!

I had one, not now as I dont need it.

How about the acoustic mounts, ive heard they are ok, and quite cheap.

You could also consider a bit of DIY if you think your up to it :p

The Zalman HD cooler thing mount the harddisk using rubber mounts in a 5.25 bay. Works very well at quieting the hdd.

Is it the HDD making the noise or is it causing the case to resonate? Remove it from the case if you can, and hold it in your hand... Is it just as noisy? If so then rubber mounting wont help...

I was gonna just DIY it with sewing elastic as loads of people have done, but just thought I'd try and be a little less ghetto thats all :p

It's a WD Caviar, and used to be whisper quiet in my Antec Sonata when mounted on rubber grommits. I think mainly it is causing the case itself to resonate (louder than all the case fans combined!). I'll try what Samcat suggested just to check though, good idea :)

i have one, its not as good as it states it is "95% reduction in noise  ) but it does work, my hdd temp rose from 18oc to 22oc but thats probably due to the fact it is no longer infront of a 120mm fan. Ill post a pic up in a min, it looks good, exellent build quality.

Hi, I read somewhere that if the hard drive is resonating against the case then the cheapest and easiest way to stop this is to buy some velcro, put two strips on the hard drive and the strips above in the cage (this is made easier if you have a removable cage). Then just stick the hard drive onto the cage so it is suspended and this stops and vibration getting to the case. This is not as effective as a silentmax enclosure but it is much cheaper and the hard drive is still kept cool.

Oh ye, and just wait for it to fall off onto the bottom of your case, doesn't sound like too great a plan to me.

22c max?

Lucky I have a Scythe silentbox and maxxes @ 60-65c, and hdds in general start melting 65c+ !

22c is nothing at all to worry about id be happy around 50c.....

I would say my enclosure blocked upto 70% of the noise its still hearable but just about, taking it out of the enclosure makes it worser (seagate 300gigger-sata) can hear the hum and hdd grind..... and irony is the seagates pretty quiet ;)

I have a Maxtor Hard Drive and it is suspended in the CDRom bay of my case with sewing elastic. It is dead quiet!! Cannot hear it. Been like this for a year or more with no problems.

ive got 3 maxtor drives in silentmaxx enclosures they take away all the high pitched nosie, all the resonance and most of the deep sounds, its stil noticiable at accessing and motor is quite quiet now, plus they're also heatsinks my hdd's dropped in running temps by over 20degrees.

Hey Mark A did you ever do those pictures of the silentmaxx?? As i am interested in this thanks
Sorry i forgot all about this thread, ill sort a pic out now, they look good but there blue not black as pictured on ocuk website. It does work and the good thing is its reuseable just undo the thumb screws take 4 screws out of the top panel and pop your new hdd in :) , its good quality and will last a lifetime. Mine stays around 22oc idle but rises to around 30oc after a defrag, i was abit worried at first about the hdd overheating but this doesnt seem to be the case, i think the enclosure being aluminum works as a big heatsink. The one i got seems to be an upgraded version from the one i read reviews on, it used to come with silver foil inside but now comes with a silicone heat transfere pad.

how tall are the silentmaxxes? i'm doing some silent modifications to a shuttle which is quite limited in space. i'm either going to have to suspend the drive or if it is small enough, mount it in one of these

What sort of hdd size and temps are u getting with that silentmaxx drive?

Im getting 50c with my seagate 300gigger SATA drive same case/but Scythe silentbox.

Its good not hearing the hdd but @ 50c bit worrying although they say 65c max....
