PRE-ORDER: Warhammer 40000: Dawn Of War II Retribution - Collectors Edition

im just curious, does anyone prefer the DWII series better than the original series...

and im curious if anyone knows why they changed???

i really dislike the new ones, i prefer building what i want, not getting select units.

I do actually - I liked the story line better. I wouldn't say you got to really know the characters like in a good FPS or whatever, but it was more enjoyable than a series of normal MP scenarios strung together like DOW: DC, (and to a certain extent the first two as well).

does anyone know if this is steam based? IE you can link it to your steam account? The only reason I ask is if you get the collectors edition on DVD you can get ALL the wargear whereas if you pre-order on steam you can only choose 1 race's wargear. Anyone know?

I prefer the newer ones I have just found it caught me more rather than any real reasons. Plus I love the focus on your units in the multi player rather than the timing of when you put the next base structure down. Advancing your base comes with map control and preventing your enemies teching up.
Any way the best bit about this expansion is the steam integration and the fact it has changed ranking system.
Instead of the trueskill 1-50 scale this now has up to 3000 which means you are playing people much closer to your skill level and I noticed a huge difference in the beta.

I have bought it so if anyone would like someone to play through the originals and the new one in coop or online then let me know. Steam name is in sig. manicmike84 aka kruxxie

Yeah, the game links to Steam no matter who you buy from. It's also ditched GFWL in favour of Steam's matchmaking service.

THQ deserve a ****ing medal for finally letting Microsoft know how crap their GFWL service really is.

Afaik it was comfirmed that Retribution will be useing steamworks for activation and matchmacking, so box copies are fine to add steam. Which is just all kinds of awsome compared to GFWL :D

And is the poster the thing in the top right of the picture? seems kinda portrait sized?

Oh HELL YES! I was going to maybe get it on Steam, but a boxed collector's edition for the same price?!

NO...MUST RESIST SPENDING MONEY!!!

Also I'm glad they ditched GFWL. It took me ages to get it to sync with my account and I couldn't play the game for days.

DoW1 and DoW2 are completely different game styles, so you cant really compare. The first is like any typical RTS where you can mass units, so it is good in that respect and I still like it a lot. DoW2 is more focused on micromanagement and co-ordinating select units strategically to win, making sure you have enough range of units to counter what the enemy throws at you. It is really quite 'counter' based, but still very good in this respect as well.

The campaign for Retribution, while still has a focus on 4 heroes, these heroes are now solo and not apart of a squad like the vanilla and CR, and you now have the ability to build squads to assist your heroes, so it is like merging the two games together, to some degree.

This game is looking to be great, and I played the beta and really enjoyed it, and cant wait to see what the campaign is like.

52 pence off...

okay it is less and one should not complain about saving any amount of money but come on.....

Yes its a brand new release, its not going to have a terrible amount off but I wanted to see what I could do to help out. I can put it back up if you would like?

I like them both. There is no reason why they couldn't run parralel series if they thought there was the demand. E.g Epic Dow, and tactical Dow.
