While the last couple of results weren't great things have to be put into perspective. We've had the majority of our first team unavailable for 1 reason or another and unlike other clubs, we've not been playing against part-time sides.
Lots of teams have had lots of first teamers unavailable, but the playing part-time sides, seriously? Two crap asian teams, Hull, leaving Galatasaray the only decent side and still Turkish footie isn't particularly big, but away is always difficult. Considering who Utd/City have been playing, and Villa playing Blackburn, etc, etc, Liverpool haven't been playing "strong" opposition in the slightest.
Likewise, Cole is on a huge wage and seemingly unwilling to leave(or no one wants him, or a mix of both) and appeared 20 times for liverpool last year, Caragher has played, Agger, Kelly, Flanagan have all played the last two had quite a lot of games, 18 for Kelly, 7 for Flanagan, midfield wise.
Spearing 15 games, slaphead no.2 had 21 games(mostly sub and not much time to be fair). While they aren't first team a lot of them, they are FAR more than the 4th choice players you seem to be trying to say, a lot of these guys had more starts/appearances/time on the pitch than a lot of subs/2nd string at other top clubs.
Not saying its a hugely strong team, just not quite as weak as you seem to be suggesting, theres been plenty of experience, not very good opposition and even the strongest squads haven't been very good so far.
EDIT:- Also not suggesting its a ridiculously bad preseason or it means altogether that much for the coming season, but those players being injured and your Copa stars not being back yet, some/all of them could be missing come the start of the season, in which case the current players who really aren't playing well against not great teams could indeed be the guys lining up for the first few games of the season, and a lot of them will play probably quite a lot this season.
