*** Pre-season Friendlies Thread ***

He's literally been doing this thing all preseason every game I've seen where he dribbles with the ball and crawls to a halt, trying to get the defender to stop so he can knock it past him, normally right along the goal line. It worked once or twice but there's a real danger of it slowing up our attacks.

Gotta say I'm REALLY surprised to see Arshavin playing, I was convinced he'd be leaving this summer.

Yeah I'm watching the game with a friend and we're laughing about how his decision making is still woeful. Could have given Poddy his hat-trick but shot straight at the defender... just scored though lol.

Keeper clearly hasn't done his homework becuase Gervinho scored an identical goal in the Markus Liebbher cup, this is what he does, go down left wing, dribble along the goal line, and try and sneak it under the keeper.

Yup he's predictable and his decision making is woeful, he needs to improve a lot. How on earth did he outscore and out-assist Hazard?

How do people think we'll line up next season? Obviously Wilshere is going to be out till... who knows but there's a few ways we could set up with the players we have now.

We only paid £400k for Song. I'd be happy to sell if we got a proper DM as to let the actual attacking players go forward.

Oh I agree, I just don't know what our first 11 will be if RVP stays. Will the formation change, or will RVP start with Giroud on the bench? If RVP goes then I think the front three will probably be Podolski - Giroud - Walcott. I was encouraged by Giroud, his movement, hold up play and technique were very good. He brought other players into the game and he was really unlucky not to score, the Cologne keeper stopped three good efforts.

I would actually water at the thought of a Podolski/Arteta/Santi/Wilshire/RVP midfield 5 with Giroud up top, or Arshavin right, rvp up top and Giroud on the bench.

I just can't see it happening under Wenger but you never know. We looked VASTLY improved today, but then Cologne seemed a bit errm, completely rubbish so its really hard to gauge how well they played. Podolski's goals were well taken, the ball over the top for Gibbs to run on to was great, his interplay was great, he looked like the Podolski I've seen for the past decade, not the one from the summer which is fantastic.

Giroud, wasn't overly impressed with him infront of goal shooting, but did well to get the ball to others. RVP looks not at all sharp, but I know how good he is so have no problem. Gervinho looks a joke still, sure he got a goal, he got two last year in the same fixture. Multiple times he beat awful fullbacks just to pass into the box so poorly I wanted to cry, and the Arshavin run towards the end which he then passed brilliantly to Gervinho who somehow didn't shoot, took it wide then shot with no chance of scoring.

Gervinho will always be like that, 99/100 times he does the wrong thing when it matters, I don't care how long you can dribble the ball if you won't ever do anything with it afterwards.

Djourou/Song were their usual mix of stupidity and fouls, Song got away with a few fouls as per usual, how he gets away with them I don't know, he should without exaggeration be carded in every single game I've seen him play, how he doesn't I don't know, I forget which game it was he managed to get a yellow in the first 15 mins, then played the entire game, fouling constantly without getting sent off, Barca game I think. While I think he's an awful footballer I'll give him this, he is ******* magic at not getting cards when he should :p

Walcott, a couple half decent crosses but still the biggest *****(feline) that I've seen in a top league. Goes down constantly, and 99/100 times chooses to pass backwards rather than actually put in some effort and try and pass someone on the wing. He's got pace, and nothing else, and is the single least willing player in the country to use his pace.

What I'm most disappointed with is, this was our last preseason game, Giroud got 45mins, its not like he looked shattered nor are we playing in 3 days, only game with the team before the start of the season and we couldn't give him 90 mins, he needs to push it physically to be ready, no real reason for Podolski not to finish, nor have we at any stage even for 45 minutes played what is a first team together, which is completely ridiculous. We should have started the most likely to start next week first team, played them as long as possible and subbed as and when players got shattered. I can't see the logic of going into a new season without your first team having played even 45mins together, utterly mad.

I really don't know, Hazard was maybe a bit raw when young, constantly shot wide and Gervinho kept getting smacked with the ball and it went in off him? Maybe Hazard is THAT good, the manager made an awful buy and asked Hazard to purposefully score deflected goals off Gervinho's forehead to lure some sucker into buying the "high scoring" plonker :p

Podolski probably got subbed for sentimental reasons so the crowd could give him a sendoff, and there would have been little point throwing on RvP just for one minute or something (also a risk leaving the sub late with a ref who doesn't even play 45mins per half :p)

As for Giroud's shooting in front of goal there was one chance in the first half it looked to me like he took it with the wrong foot? AOC I think played in a cross from the right and he opened up his body for the left sidefoot rather than the natural swing of the right foot. To be fair he got it on target but if you are on the righthand side of the goal, and a cross comes in from the right, normally you would take it with your right foot rather than trying to let it come across you and open up the body to shoot with your left, which basically makes it almost impossible to put it in the left corner or get much power in it. End result being it was too close to the keeper for the amount of power generated.

To be fair I've probably done the same years ago on the other side of the pitch due to being crap on left foot but then nobody has paid 12m quid for me yet.. :p

I think you're being slightly critical of him, I remember three efforts from him and they were all stopped by good keeping rather than him fluffing his lines. Did he not hit the bar with a header also? :)
