Just to highlight that it isn't always men who lose out in divorces:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4263792/Millionaire-wife-battling-ex-7m-fortune.html

A wife who made £10million in 'eye-watering' bonuses as a city trader is now battling for a 'fair' divorce settlement after her ex-husband walked away with half her fortune.

Julie and Robin Sharp were married for four years but are battling in court because Mrs Sharp wants his settlement slashed by £1.5million, from £2.7million to £1.2million.

When they met both were already earning around £100,000 but energy trader Mrs Sharp amassed £10million in bonuses over five years due to the 'soaring' energy market.

The couple set up home in a grand £2million Gloucestershire home and Mr Sharp was lavished with 'boys toys' including an Aston Martin sportscar.

But in 2013 their childless marriage from 2009 fell apart when it emerged that Mrs Sharp's husband was having an affair - at the time the 'matrimonial pot' stood at £6.9million.

Separate bank accounts, she made the millions, no kids, marriage only lasted 4 years and fell apart because he had an affair.... and the judge awarded him half! That does seem pretty unfair even if he did take redundancy and 'project manage' building the second house in the country - I don't think a hobby project deservers a 7 figure pay out.

Judge was doing the equal rights thing there. Women get half so why shouldn't men?

There is still a gender pay gap and you will always have the exceptions like this one. However 99 times out of 100 it would be the other way about.

I don't think it is fair to get half in that situation regardless of the genders involved.

Regardless of what you think that is the way it happens. It happens every day. Also he never got half. He got 2.7 mill from 6.9 mill which is less than half.

Even celebrities such as the Beatles have had to hand over millions in divorce settlements.

The precedent has already been set with the thousands of cases that have came before it.

He did get half, only you discount the assets owned before the marriage. He gets half of the assets acquired during the marriage, which given that they were mostly earned by her, they don't have any kids and the marriage was only 4 years + ended when he has an affair has lead her to believe it isn't a fair settlement thus the reason she's applying. We'll have to wait and see what happens on appeal.
