Year 7-9 it was goth

they fail to realise.. my name is Alec. thats all there is to it :rolleyes:

It is quite a long time ago now that I started first year but I'd take (in no particular order):

Alcohol + snackfoods (although this depends how close the nearest shops are and what time you get there) as for the first few days you are unlikely to actually make anything much in the kitchen other than a mess.
Clean sheets/towels, change and washing powder for the washing machines and generallly what you'd require to keep yourself clean for the first 2 weeks or so as until that point you probably won't be settled in or considering what else you need i.e. treat it as if you were going on holiday.
Stationary of some sort (a couple of pens and a notebook will do until you see what your courses require).
Some sort of music player (hifi, boombox or whatever as that is useful for parties).
If you are going to buy a computer then a cheapish laptop with a decent sized hard drive and wifi is probably your best bet (many unis have wifi connections now and if you have a music collection anything like mine then you need a fair hard drive).
Remember if you take a TV then you will probably need a TV licence individually since most are done on an individual tenancy basis in halls.
Take sports stuff, if it is anything like my halls you will find that quite a few games of football etc get arranged.

Most important thing you can take with you is a good attitude - remember for most people this is the first time they will ever have lived with anyone who isn't family so they will naturally feel a bit nervous - try and get involved in what is on offer (certain exceptions spring to mind but it is up to you to decide where your limits are) and enjoy yourself. :)

One of my biggest regrets (well... not really, but you know what i mean) is that I didn't take a TV to uni halls.

My attitude was that I didn't see the point in paying for a TV license when most of the time I'd be socialising or studying. I figured if I was sat around watching TV all the time I wouldn't be getting to know people as much. But the reality is, if you have a TV then it can entice people to come in to your room (i.e. it's a people magnet unless everyone has one).

I had the biggest room in my flat, but we probably spent more time in someone else's room because he had a TV (albeit a black and white one) and a hi-fi.

Also means you don't have to rely on what other people like watching. None of my friends at uni were into football really so I saw hardly any.

Mmmm, mostly chavs at my school. I was called a 'goff' for most of school, up until about y10 when people realised I didn't really give a crap what they thought. I'll still never understand how a goth can have blonde hair :(

Off topic: I hope you've listened to blackfield as well :p

Noticed your sig the other day :D Excellent music my friend! Another huge PT fan here too and YES I'm big into Blackfield too :p

EDIT:

SideWinder, buy the PC, live off your loans ('It's what Uni is all about :D ) if you're working and pulling in that much a week then I assure you you'll be fine.

Interesting comments so far...thankyou. :)

Going to sound stupid but can i expect to see loads of people arriving with suitcases? Carrying everything they can manage?

Also, do you get your own address so if you order something online, it can be posted to you?

Still unsure if i'll actually get the job as obviously jobs will be snapped up quite quickly...so i'll have to wait
and see. =/

posted by Raymond Lin around this time last year and is all pretty much spot on:-

1 - Bring your own pans, plates, forks and stuff. But nothing you are not prepared to lose or break.

2 - Always have change for the washing machine and drier.

3 - Get some bleach for the loo

4 - Get Friends on DVD, all 10 seasons. I am serious !!! Almost every girls love it, get scrubs too for the lads.

5 - Always have some alcohol at hand, get a bottle of vodka or what not and keep it at your room, only use it for the occational drink or when a lady friend comes around.

6 - Do your own washing up in the kitchen, don't leave a mess around. And now and again empty the bin too.

7 - Don't pack the freezer with your stuff, be considerate.

8 - Always leave your door open when you are in

9 - Be open, don't judge people on first impression, you might miss out on some really good friends.

10 - Don't lent anyone money either, at least for a while, you might never see them again.

11 - Keep your room tidy and clean, you don't want to be the messy and smelly one.

12 - Learn to cook, i have not seen a girl at uni who can cook in the first year. You'll have them wrapped round your fingers if you can cook somme decent grub.

13 - If you have a car, don't be afriad to charge people a little towards petrol if you all go somewhere quite far.

14 - Do a few Tesco shopping trips together, it's fun doing it with friends

15 - TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES, I really regret i hardly took any when i was in plymouth uni, prob because i didn't have a camera then but i really wish i had.

16 - Don't be too loud with your music

17 - Have a collection of films, but don't lent it out to everyone and anyone. You might never see it again.

18 - Be nice to the warden, you'll see him for the next 10 months.

19 - Be prepared to take some practical joke, and be prepare to do it back

20 - Don't take CDs, mp3 them all, save SO much room

21 - There are posters sale at the start of the year always at the union

22 - Some people steal ketchup and sauces like that, don't get so hang up on it.

23 - Get a mini fridge if you can afford it in your room.

24 - If you don't have a printer, get one.

25 - Get a Laptop with a external HD or a shuttle, don't need a full size PC.

26 - TFT saves so much room too, CRT is ancient ! Make it widescreen if you can afford it.

27 - Don't play with the fire distinguiser, you'll get fined !

28 - Learn to drink out of a pint glass, because you'll be doing that a lot, even when you are sober. Because they'll start surfacing everywhere, not just in pubs.

29 - DO NOT, SERIOUSLY, DO NOT let people know you know about PCs , you'll ended up being the tech guy who everyone comes to get their problem fixed for nothing. Not worth it, specially when you can't fix it and they blame you for it.

30 - There will be drugs going around, don't be tempted. People won't look down on you because you don't participate.

31 - Oh, check under the draws for some hidden treasures ! (if you can call them that), I've always found things under there, sometimes unintentional like an essay or a pair of thong ! but I've also found little gifts the previous person left behind. My mate did too in her room, and we both left our own thing behind when we left.

32 - If your room don't come with insurance, get some, cost about £5 a month.

33 - Always have a stock of asprin for hang overs.

34 - Opened tin canned food does not go in the fridge, yuck, and you might kill yourself. Put it in a bowl first.

35 - If you have a choice betweem surfing the net or go hang with friends, choose friends.

36 - Get a hard to kill pot planet to liven up your room.

37 - Corridor Cricket is dangerous

38 - watch your spending, it is tempting to spent it as you have all that loan but it goes....FAST, EASILY.

39 - Learn to spot who just want to be your friends to take advantage, and who can be real friends early.

40 - Have a jar of sweets in your room is also nice, again, girls love them.

41 - bring bluetac for your posters, whitetac don't stick as well. If they don't allow bluetac as they leave a mark, use white toothpaste, when its dried, it sticks, when you take it off, wipe with wet towel will get rid of it

42 - If you have an old stereo or old TV that you don't give a crap about, put it in the kitchen/communal area

43 - Have emergency snacks, for those late night chats in the kitchen or after you know but don't want to leave the room.

44 - In the first few days, report any damage already in your room to the accomodation service, so you are not going to get blame at the end of the year. No things is too small, even chips off paint or gum on the carpet.

45 - Bring some coat hangers with you, there might not be any.

46 - Ready meals are expensive, more so than real ingredients.

47 - Be prepared for the 4am fire drill, then be prepare to see people come out half dressed and may be some got interupted mid way. lol

48 - Get some post-its, great for leaving messages for your friends on their door.

49 - Don't lent your friend the library card !!! You will get fined when they forget the books.

50 - Don't go too mad on Freshers Week, you want to be able to remember it, and talk to people and make friends. Passing out means you'll miss it all.

I presume you're talking about halls, I've never stayed in them but as far as I know things will get delivered to receiption where you can then collect them.

Yes but it'll depend on how your accommodation is set out.

For instance my old address was

Room 1
Flat 311
Brecon Court (one of the blocks of on campus accommodation)
Coldharbour Lane tThe road the uni was on)
Bristol

Basically it'll be

Your name/room number
Your flat number
Your building
Your street

There should be an accommodation manager (normally also a student) that sorts out post. Whether they'll put it through your door or you'll have to go to a certain room to get it is their choice really.

Mini-Fridge and cheap microwave if you can find a good deal. I got my microwave for about 50 canadian dollars, cheap as hell and it works fine.

I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a microwave already in halls. What I did find useful, however, was a panini press. Fresh wraps every day :)

If that goes the same way as the toastie maker did in ours it will be more or less unusable after the first month unless you have a supremely high tolerance to ecoli, salmonella and various other nasty bacteria.

Bedding

* Sheets
* Duvet/Quilt
* Duvet/Quilt Cover
* Pillows
* Pillow Cases
* Mattress Protector
* Blanket
* Mush ;)
* Hot Waterbottle
* Sleeping Bag
* Inflatable Bed

Ummm? :confused:

Definitions of mush on the Web:

pulp: any soft or soggy mass; "he pounded it to a pulp"
cornmeal boiled in water
treacle: an expression that is excessively sweet and sentimental
drive (a team of dogs or a dogsled)
a journey by dogsled
dogsled: travel with a dogsled

Duh!

/shrugs.

See that's why for the first term I always put it in my cupboard (lockable) after using it. 2nd and 3rd time I left it out in the kitchen, but by then they'd all got the idea that I didn't want them using it.

Lame ^^

I always went by the philosphy, dont get upset when people use your stuff, because 95% of the time, you will need something from them too.

We never locked our cupboard in my 10bed flat and no one ever nicked a thing, suppose it depends on who you get, or how your halls are laid out.

I think the most important one is, always leave your door open when your in, it makes people feel more comfortable to come talk to you, and makes you seem more friendly.
Make sure you keep your windows open, tidy up and have a nice tv or big monitor, my room was basically a social club by the end of first term.
Take a crate of beer, and the second you have your stuff settled in, go to each room close by or in the flat say hello and offer them a beer. Then suggest going out that night on the lash :)

No swearing.

Zefan.
