hey when doing press-ups when should i breath in and out? I always seem to hold my breath when im doing pressups as i find it easier this way but i should really be breathing.

Usual rule with lifting is to breathe in on the eccentric (the part with mavity) and out on the concentric (the part against mavity)

The way I always remember it is that with the pushing action I am 'pushing' the air from my body at the same time and the reverse also applies. Helps stop me getting confused. :D

It's not about technique, trust me ;) It's all about practice, practice, practice :)

i know its just when i cannot do them because i cant breath or i try to think of breathing then mess up my pressups lol

How many will i need to do my soon to be officer friend? :p

Breathing is very important in any fitness techniques. Mainly anything with push or pull. When you hold your breath you excert a lot of pressure on yourself. You may notice your head almost exploding lol.

The build up of pressure from the strenuous activity can actually impair your eyesite too i believe. so BREATH!! :D

pressups are good , you will notice improvements within a couple of weeks. The increases are really big. i say within 2 months of doing them regularly, if you aint a big fat dude.. then i reckon you could do about 80 of em off the pop at least!

Wow thats good. I can bench more than my body weight and have been weight training for a few years but I really struggle with Pressups. After 20 I am knackered. I would love to be able to bang 80 out in one go, this may be a new target for me to achieve ! ;)

P.S. Do you do them very day ? Say start at 20 and add one extra every day?

I got into a routine of pressups last year and within a short space of time I could do 100 straight off. I found it was very easy to progress quickly with pressups, every few weeks you could add quite a few more. Dont do any now though, stick to the gym.

100!!

What kind of form/technique do you use? Narrow or wide hands, palms or knuckles, chest to the floor or less, push up to arms straight or slightly bent?

I usually finish off my chest days with some press-ups but usually only manage 20, 30 on a good day. Don't think i'd be able to do 100 even if i was fresh.

Moss : Did you do them every day?

I might invest in some of those "Handle" things which allow you better range of movement.

remember these are military press-ups i have to do :p (thats my excuse for been crap at them)

Arms dead inline with your shoulders and chest about 3inch off the floor!

After about 11 i collapse :o

Well from what i remember when i was doing them a year or so ago. I used to do about 3 sets of 10 a night, but that was pretty much only exercise i was doing lol.

I would do this maybe 4 nights a week, i know with weight training which i do now, i split it.. but at the time i was just pressups.

I remember going from 10 to 20, then 30, 40, 50 and i could do 60 off the pop. But its wierd, i dont think i could do that now. infact. im gonna try in a minute :)

technique wise i just do standard form kinda pressups, not wide or narrow. and the range of movement is about right i think, i dont think i do smaller movements.

Ok, i only managed 30 that time lol.

and my head nearly exploded :D

I might be wrong these days, but i know it was a massive increase when i last did em! lol. Tonight was the first time ive done them in a long time though. I bench press at the gym, but the pressups seemed to strain my wrists that time :(

I always do pressups on knuckles since i bust my wrist doing heavy dips. At first it feels hard if you've not got good wrist strength but i now prefer it to palms flat.

Not wanting to highjack this thread...but what is the best form for pressups?

1. Hands flat, palms down
2. Knuckles
3. Finger tips

Sorry for not getting back into the thread quicker, I done them pretty much everyday, just using a standard technique.
For some strange reason I find pressups far easier than situps.
