Previous owners

1.5 years of ownership is a decent amount of time, IMO - that wouldn't worry me. I've never owned a car for that long and sold on without issues. The only shed I bought that did have issues, went on ebay with a full list of the known problems for £200 haha.

If it's a long way to go, I'd be asking a lot of questions before making the trek.

What's the car? Is it really that hard to get one in similar spec for similar money nearer to you?

feb 2010 to august 2012 = 2.5years.

although agree that's a fair amount of time.

I just wonder why it had 4 owners in the first 4 years of ownership. Seems a bit dodge. It is a bit reassuring that the last owner has had it for 2.5 years though.

I wouldn't worry about that... if it was for issues - the warranty would have covered them, so I doubt it was being offloaded due to problems

Personally it would put me off knowing that it wont take long for an example with less owners to appear, its not exactly a rare car

With certain options it is. There are hardly an abundance of them on sale to be fair. within 100 miles of me on Autotrader with under 80000 miles and under £8k there are about 6 :(

It certainly needs some answers before taking the trip.

It might be as follows:

1st owner garage, pre registered
2nd owner short time, two months, hated it, partex back to the garage

rest of owners normal.

If it's a case of it's changed private ownership every year then that would concern me why people didn't keep it longer.

If I was spending that kind of money I'd hold out for a 1 owner, Different with the old sheds I buy, they are judged individually.

I know, I was just pointing out in response to people who say they only buy one owner cars that two owners can be acceptable in certain cases ;)

oh :p.

Yeh 2 owners would not have worried me at all. 5 however....

I have a big decision on my hands. 5 hour round trip and £50 to waste!

Any particular reason you want this car?

Suppose it could be to your taste - but I've been subjected to using them a couple of times as hire cars & they're vile... uncomfortable and horrible interior finish.

For the same money, you can buy lower mileage & slightly newer mondeos & they're much nicer cars, in my opinion.

There's also Jag X-types, Audi A4s, Honda Accord, and more... I'd pick any of those before any Skoda.

To be fair... my knowledge with this type of car isn't that great, so maybe there's another reason I don't know of you particularly wanting this?

It is a Mk2 Octavia VRS, well spec'd ( well the spec i want anyway) and yes they are a bit few and far between for the 5.5-6.5k mark.

Don't you think there is a season for that and that you should up your budget or pick something more affordable if that's not possible?

^^

Going for the cheapest cars on the market is rarely the best option.

Sometimes you can luck out, however... like I did with my 320d - it was the cheapest for it's year, but there was a valid reason for it (dodgy fix of BMW lacquer peel).

Wouldn't bother me - buy on condition.

I was the 5th owner of my M3 when I bought it aged 5.5yrs old. From what I understand, the first owner had it 1 year, 2nd owner had it 1 year, 3rd owner had it 2 months and sold it when he found out his wife was pregnant (the text messages still saved in the car's phone system are corroborating evidence), the 4th owner owned it for 2 years and did 9,000 miles in it.

No, there are just generally not many for sale within a reasonable distance from where i live. I am hardly looking at the very high mileage nails ( which are more like 4.5-5k)

As many have written on motors including i am sure yourself Fox, why spend 8-9k on an 08 car when it will be the same as an 06 car for ~6k.

My max upper budget is £7k and I hardly think that is unreasonable for a good 06-07 Octavia VRS.

it is not the cheapest car on the market and my budget is by no means unreasonable for a decent 06 VRS.

Hot hatches and fuel guzzlers, no.

Boring every day car, yes.

Reason why, a lot of people who cannot afford hot hatches buy them and then sell them pretty quick. People who buy boring cars, mainly buy them to run them into the ground and get rid rid when things keep going wrong. Therefor I automatically see boring cars as lemons if they have a load of owners.

Just my opinion though :)
