Just made an absolute tit of myself tonight. My normal chest routine is 3x8 on the free-weight bench press then followed up to failure with about 5x8 on the Smiths, at least on the Smiths I can snap back in on failure and slide out from underneath.

The smiths was out of action tonight awaiting repair, so being an idiot I did 3x8 on the bench, did a some DB presses and a few shoulder exercises and thought I'd hit the bench again as I didnt feel 'complete'. 4th set...3rd rep..bang my arms just turned to jelly. 80Kg fell on to my chin and onto my chest. I was rolling around like a beached whale. Luckily a fellow gym goer rescued me.

My pride is so bruised :( In my gym, all of the weights are at the front of the gym underneath the suspended TVs, were rows and rows of cross trainers and treadmills overlook (read as, rows and rows of women). Peak time, 5.30pm. What makes it worse is that it looked like my 1st set.... :(

For some reason I felt the need to tell the internet of my epic fail :p

Its nearly as bad as farting when your on the cross trainer :D

Lesson definitely learned, need to calm my ass down and think before I act.

Even worse is on a concept2 rower (or similar with fan type thing at the front) and it gets blown back into your face as you're moving forwards. Especially if there's a somewhat hot girl next to you. :D

Rofl, i nearly just spat water all over my compy.

Dont stress it man. It's not like these people matter to you, or you were actually chasing any of the tail that saw ya :)

You probably gave a few people a pub story that everyone'll forget in a week :D

Ant

Mate i really would not worry about it. I have done it, twice in fact. First time ended up with a massive bruise on my stomach when i had to roll 90kg off my chest and down off my stomach.

That's the problem with bench pressing without a spotter. You dont want to cheat your workout so you attempt to eek out that last rep which you believe you can get... and then you can't!

I suspect most bench presser's have encountered some difficulty at one point.

Don't let it put you off, just be a little more careful next time.

Unless they happen to read these here forums where they can relive the whole show over and over again :D.

I have had failure a number of times with bench presses but luckily, in my old gym the benches had bottom catches whick are just above the elbow at 90 deg stage so I always managed to get it just up to theose catches.

I am dreading the squat failure and imagining having to wobble around like dusty bin (3-2-1) until I can get it low enough to catch on the safety bars or flop backwards so the bars catch it. Not so easy to do with 90Kg weighing you down I would imagine .....

At least you didnt roll to one side and have all the plates slide off causing you to shoot over to the other side as that is then the only side still loaded with weights.

At least you are still here and have a talking point if you wish to chat to the ladies. ;)

I've never done that but I've been there when a few people have and it is hilarious to see them go for as long as humanly possible before asking for some help, long after the point of getting it anywhere near the bar.

Me and my mate were spotting each other and i turned around and there was this ginger mid sit up with about 60kgs on his chest, face as red as anything trying as hard as possible to move, we helped him straight away but all he had to do was go "scuse me mate" straight away and it woulda been fine.

I miss going to the gym.

Kudos to you for admitting to it :p

Was there instructors round to spot you? Or even another gym member? I always find BP work to be useless without a spotter as i'll be too worried of dropping the weight to fully push myself.

I've done similar but it's a weights room with only guys generally :( It was on squats and the usual rack was in use so I used an open rack... was going fine on the 3rd rep, then suddenly BANG 180kg hits the deck - I just lost it, focus and drive everything just switched off. So so lucky there was no one behind me as well.

I fell off a rowing machine once. so embarrasing, I was trying to really give it some with the legs took off arse landed on the I beam and I fell over to the side with my feet still attached

Unlucky mate. I don't know what would happen in the floor of my gym if you dropped 180k from shoulder height. Its the 2nd floor of a 100 year old building with weird wooden flooring. Some plonker already put a whole straight through to underneath while deadlifting :\

I've made my fair share of gym faux pars.
  1. flat barbell benching with about 30kg on each end (luckily not my heaviest set). I didn't bother putting the clips on after the plates, and on this occasion i didn't balance myself correctly  so.....the plates slide off one-side, which then left the other end totally heavy with me trying to balance it. I failed and was immediately springboarded up and off the bench like a polevaulter, with the barbell ending up vertical sitting in the remaining plate stack for that one side. :( What a goof i felt! I then did the Del Boy routine when i got up (the one where he fell through the bar), gets up shrugging my shoulders and pecking my head like a bloody chicken.
  2. After an unaccustomed 30 min run on the treadmill, i failed to realise how dead my legs were. As i got off the treadmill, my legs completey independently to the rest of my body carried on jogging, I almost riverdanced for about 20ft before i could regain control of my legs. Flippin weird feeling.....it did cause a few giggles.... but i carried on as if nothing was wrong. What a pillock!
Gotta look back and laugh now though. :p

nearly had an episode of this in the gym on Sunday just gone. I normally start of with the heaviest weight, then get lighter with each set, so for my first exercise, which was bench press, i decided to start with 47.5KG each side. Normally i'd slap 20kg on each side to warm up on, but i was pumped up and decided to go for it that day. I put the 47.5 KG's on each side, slid myself in position, done my normal routine of trying out various grips on the bar and slapping my back/shoulders on the bench to get comfortable, i then started to lift. Now, the previous week i started off with 45 KG each side, and managed to lift the bar off the rack no problem. This time was different. I tried to lift the bar off the rack, found it pretty much impossible, and thought to myself 'what the **** off', but by then it was too late as the bar was already up in the air and had cleared the rack. I hardly ever have someone spotting me, but luckily i spotted the guy who was using the bench before me, and he decided to return the favour, luckily. I'd told this guy i normally bang out 8 reps in a set, however i barely managed to make it to 3, and by the 4th i had nothing left in the tank, and although my hands were still grasping the bar, the guy was doing most of the lifting and trying to motivate me with 'come on buddy, you can make it to 8', whilst i was thinking ****off, can't you see i struggled to lift the Fully star out swearys. - Thundycat. off the rack in the 1st place'.

What i learnt from this experience - do a warmup set first, not just to get the body prepared, but to also make sure everything is as it seems. I found out afterwards the bar that normally goes with the bench press had been swapped, and in it's place was one which was MUCH heavier.
