Primera GT??

The interior isn't too bad on them. No Ghia X walnut effectness but comparable to a Vectra or a Mundano GLX or somthing.

Do you ever give up?

The Mondeo is very reliable - certainly more so than bottom of the range, poverty spec solid red Seats - the V6 is just as quick, if not more so at the top end than the GT, and both Mondeo and Primera are a favourite amongst taxi drivers.

Both are good cars, it's simply personal preference which one you prefer. The GT is excellent for a 2.0 - the Mondeo is a great 6 cylinder car. The Mondeo has a better interior, the GT is cheaper to insure, its swings and roundabouts.

Go and wind up your rear windows by hand or something.

Sucks when people **** your car off ain't it? :p :D

hi i have a 1999 Primera GT Limited Edition, i.e full leather interior, electric wind rear windows, 16" factory Enkei's etc (standard GT's miss these features as [TWFOX] kindly points out)

great engine. loves to rev, and has good pull above 4000rpm... seems strange but u have to put past 6k to 7k revs to get the most out of it.

so far since i got my car last sept, i have:

2 new CV joints, Drivers and pass. side.... common issue,
Discs front and back - consumables will happen to every car
new battery - old one was leaking...

planned;
new shocks on front, passenger side is softer than drievrs upsetting handling
£est 130 fitted
SSAC header Manifold/Downpipe - £133 inc shipping from USA am currently awaiting it to be delivered

the cars come with 147bhp stock. adv. timing and run optimax to take that to 150bhp. new header, exhaust, and air intake should see 165bhp quite easily. this will put the car into ST24 performance category.

hotcams from JWT available from USA ~£400 for an extra 12-15bhp

if u want any pics see the ocuk motor gallery and search for Nickg, i have a few money shots of my saloon GT on there.

That was just aimed at 50/50 and his Mondeo slagging, dont worry there is no hate for Primeras from me :)

I have a 1996 Primera EGT (thats where my sig is from :D ) and i just cannot bare to sell it! I bought it from my friend who babied and had it seviced with a Nissan dealer. Beautifull condition and has never let me down.

It has full leather interior, electric everything and handles very nicely. If you see a good condition one...buy it!

The yanks call them G20's and in NZ they're called P10, P11's.

Great site HERE

So the basic conclusion is, buy either a decent mondeo or primera and you cant really go wrong.
I'd probably choose a Primera GT over the Mondeo, although the Mondeo has a few stronger points.

Yup - for every area where one is better, there is another where the other is better. It really does come down to personal preference as there is no compelling reason NOT to buy either.

What is this utter cobblers? Of course Primera GT would be more reliable than Mondy. For starters most Primeras go through their long and comfy life with one set of suspension parts, the engine is chain driven, better, stronger and quieter than Fords 2.0 affair, the coachwork is like tank, and it has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of handling and comfort either.
Mondeos' interiors are notorious for being drunken mess full of curved fake wood and random odd switchgear and yet you want to complain about Primeras dash? Wooot? Pot, kettle, noodles, macaroni.

And why does everything have to be compared to Mondeo? WTF? Primera GT to Mondeo? What's next? Are you gonna compare Imprezas and Lancers to 16v repmobile?
Guy wants to buy diesel Golf. Everyone suggests 2 litre petrol Mondeo. Guy wants to buy Corsa, everyone suggests 2 litre Mondeo. Guy wants to buy Lanos. Everyone suggests 2 litre Mondeo in slightly worse trim. Guy wants to buy a cheap performance car. Everyone suggests 2 litre Mondeo with a body kit. This is beyong funny now, it's just French Connection UK annoying. Get over yourselves people. World doesn't end in Dagenham.

And why do I get impression that most of you never actually sat or driven cars you are so quick to diss and shoot dead from a holster?

to be fair i love my P GT's interior. it is totally uncluttered, nice and clean lines. no rattling (thankfully the rear view mirror has stopped rattling, that did my head in lol). its not as fancy as some BMW 06 320 M-tech i was in yest. but i dont think there are any real negatives about it (on my GTLE anyway .. the standard GT has some snazzy cloth trim, which i am not fond of)

compared to the mondeo V6, i think the primera GT was the more practical of the 2 which is why i went for it. it gets me 35.5mpg on the average trip, im not sure the V6 would be much above 30, if any, plus its more expensive to insure, and to buy, and to run so...

the P11 GT is similar to the 2000+ Infiniti G20 from the USA.

also, check SR20forum.com, and NPOC.co.uk, the primera owners club! i frequent all 3, and they are all invaluable sources of knowledge.

Oh here we go, I was wondering when your misinformation and anti Mondeo prejudice was going to rear its head, it was only a matter of time.

Of course Primera GT would be more reliable than Mondy. For starters most Primeras go through their long and comfy life with one set of suspension parts,

Why do you insist on making such a big deal out of £100 tops replacing wishbones every 30-50k miles? Both cars are very reliable cars, yes, even the Mondeo, yes, despite the fact its a Ford. Old Fords suck, from the Mondeo onwards, Ford sorted themselves out. Mondeo, Focus et all are reliable, dependable cars which will run for miles without major faliure.

Much like the Primera.

the engine is chain driven, better, stronger and quieter than Fords 2.0 affair, the coachwork is like tank, and it has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of handling and comfort either.

There is nothing from with the 2 litre Zetec engine. It is a very good engine and whilst it is not chain driven, it also has very long cambelt intervals.

Mondeos' interiors are notorious for being drunken mess full of curved fake wood and random odd switchgear and yet you want to complain about Primeras dash? Wooot? Pot, kettle, noodles, macaroni.

You only get wood in the 'Luxury' trim levels, much the same as with Primera. Look at the two photographs and you can see for yourself the interior differences. If you prefer Primera, thats great, buy one.

And why does everything have to be compared to Mondeo? WTF?

Hows about becuase he said..

Looking at the obvious mondao option

Quite aside from the glaringly obvious point that if you intend to buy a car in this class it's almost invariably going to be compared to the class leader.

Primera GT to Mondeo? What's next? Are you gonna compare Imprezas and Lancers to 16v repmobile?

Oh do come on - there is a WORLD of difference between a Mondeo and a Lancer Evolution, if you can't see that and think Mondeo v Primera is the same thing then, well, I pity you.

BOTH cars in this thread are '16v repmobiles'.

Guy wants to buy diesel Golf. Everyone suggests 2 litre petrol Mondeo.

Why not? It's a suggestion guy is free to ignore. He may want diesel Golf to get 40mpg on his 5000 miles a year tops Motorway trip - if so, he might not know Mondeo will do 40mpg. He might be grateful for the pointer. Or he might not care, in which case he can ignore the recommendation.

Guy wants to buy Corsa, everyone suggests 2 litre Mondeo.

Ask Tesla if he was grateful that he was suggested a Mondeo in his 'What small Supermini' thread of a year ago. I think you'll find he was - he simply hadn't considered that he could get something like that - what you consider an irrelevent recommendation actually really helped him out.

. This is beyong funny now, it's just French Connection UK annoying. Get over yourselves people. World doesn't end in Dagenham.

I could say much the same thing to you. This was a friendly thread on the merits of both cars - I've even said numerous times that both are as good as each other. But oh no, somebody said Mondeo on ocuk, its v0n to the rescue to pour scorn all over the thread becuase he has an agenda and despises the Mondeo.

News flash: I despise your cheap plastic Almera, but you dont know that becuase I don't post it in every single thread you post in.

And why do I get impression that most of you never actually sat or driven cars you are so quick to diss and shoot dead from a holster?

I've got no idea why you get that impression, Primera was one of the cars I looked into serious before buying a Mondeo.

i think both cars have their merits. the availability of mondeo 2.0's is in favour of the buyer, as are cheap ford parts.

i think the difference is the nice touches of the GT, such as the primera footplates in the door frame, GT Kit and styling, GT badge, momo gearnob (:))

i just prefer the GT all round, especially since watching matt neal and his old primera's doing the business in BTCC etc:)

if it was me, mondeo. (the 2.0 ghiax is the car i'd buy if i couldn't afford to run the celica anymore)

Totally, back when BTCC was loads of fun :)

The only reason i would pick the GT over a mondy is i prefer the looks and the package it offers.

But i do know the mondy is the better car overall and this was reflected in all the tests when each car came out, the mondy always came out top even in the handling / driving experience tests, the primera was always a very close second, i just have a soft spot for the primera and always will, i loved driving that thing :)

First, let me be a little apologetic about my general snapishness this morning, I have a gnome of a day today and joined the thread with a little more than a foul mood. It's wasn't even against you, but more of a Zinedine Zidane judgement - headbutt first, ask later. However, since we are at it....

The problem is you actually think I have an agenda (which I don't, what agenda would that be?) and you actually think someone needs to be rescued from Mondeos (which is a bit of a give away considering your brave face). You come up with pistol flashes about "my misinformation and anti Mondeo prejudice" and even treat "News flash: I despise your cheap plastic Almera" as an argument, well if it is, then that's argument below par.
First - you only ever see me suggesting Almera N16 if it's a choice between Kia Rio and Daewoo Lacetti. Because if someone is aware of Almeras position on the market, believe me, it is I. And that's despite the fact N16 is without a shadow of a doubt the fastest, best equipped, most reliable and safest hatchback £9000 can buy you today. And despite the fact that up until Leon Cupra TDI my Almera was also the fastest diesel car in it's class. But I understand that no one is willing to see beyond plastics and ugliness and I get that it became the trade's "ugly rental duckling" rather than hot hatch. Having certain budget I tried many cars, and despite some horrific ugliness from quite a few angles, Almera was my concious choice. But as a car it fullfills such specific set of requirements that I barely talk about it and very, very rarely suggest it. It's a niche car and I fully understand it's not for everyone. And I have a feeling you still don't.

Second: I don't have Mondeo prejudice, and what's more important everything I say about it is actually true, without a single bit of misinformation. What's "a big deal out of £100 tops replacing wishbones every 30-50k miles"? Well it's like asking what's the big deal with Alfa Romeo breaking down every week if it's under warranty. If repairs are free, who cares, right? Come on, wishbones and bushes every 30k on a car lighter than my hatchback is just bad design. Stop beating about a bush (bad pun, I know) and just call it that. Yes, other cars have stupid designs too, yes, Mondeo is not the only car that needs to loose subframe to charge clutch, but it only makes the flaws common, rather than non existant. If we can poke Primera with ugly dashboard (and that's usually the best we can do to point Primeras flaws), surely we can point out senslessly bad aspects of your favourite car. Please for once see Mondeo for what it is - it can be perceived as mundane, it is known to be ugly repmobile, it is common as Rooneys accent and it is too very plasticky inside and out. And by saying that let's stop mistaking aesthetics with prejudice. I will help you, let's say it together - "we drive ugly, mundane and plasticky cars". Has nothing to do with prejudice, has everything to do with sense of sight. I'll show you I'm not prejudiced - if someone wanted my suggestion - Vectra or Mondeo - Mondeo every time in every aspect. Espero or Mondeo. Mondeo every time. There is a time and place. But. Primera GT vs Mondeo 16v? Come on, even you have to see it. There is just no way to suggest Mondeo.

Now, I would like to say something, say it once and be done with it - I think of you as incredibly switched on guy, knowledgable, you are known to do your researches and most of all you have charisma. In terms of forum life that charisma means you are the "cool kid" and you have your followers. You had them months ago when you were suggesting Xantia as answer to all world's pains, you had them when you kept suggesting Xsara, you have them now when you suggest Ghia X as an answer to all life problems. And each time you evolve some significant percentage of the forum follow your footsteps, you convert people, they don't laugh at Xsara now, they suggest it too. They will echo Mondeomania and they will shove RSAP kits and alloys down every punters throat. Understand it, grasp it and take responsability for it. What you say has significance and repercussions. You have to be just in your public judgements dude. And as I said, the world didn't end in boot of hydropneumatic Xantia those years ago and it doesn't end in Dagenham now - there are many situations when technical and driving knowledge would suggest a call in favour of other brands. And this is the one - Primera 2.0 GT vs 2.0 16v Mondeo. Come on. Suggesting a Mondeo over an otherwise fantastic if a little bland on the outside, but never the less fantastic to drive sporty and well put together car would be just pure bias, don't you think? If Nissan had two cars in Europe that deserved every bit of a applause it was Primera GT and Almera N15 GTI. And it has nothing to do with "class leaders" or "v0n is at it again". You might see me as Nissan fan, but you're wrong, I almost never suggest N15 Almeras (despite them being heavens better as drivers cars than 306's for example) and most certainly, extremely rarely suggest Primeras. But this one is the one to call. Ghia X 2.0, Primera GT, bugger heated seats and wonky wishbones I say.
