Privacy on windows - what are my options?

Hi all,

In our house we have windows overlooking the street where people can of course look in - we have the same problem in our kitchen, window and neighbouring houses can look in.

What are the best options for giving us some privacy? I saw some privacy adhesive films (that you can see through) and maybe a roll down blind on top for the evenings - or should I just get some net curtains?

What would be a good option for the kitchen window?

I live in a place where every single option of this has been used.

Stick on film isn't as bad as it sounds
Net curtains if you want to impress your Nanna
Venetian shutters with a half and half mechanism
You can get blinds on some modern windows that "roll upwards"
Privacy blinds (they are see through but a quarter turn makes the opaque bits appear

Or go old school, big old fence/trellis/bush.

Blinds2go a good place to look.

You can get films which make the glass essentially a one way mirror. Same conditions ofc, only works if outside is brighter than inside. You have the light on at night it does nothing.

I've got it on some windows. It's fine.

Have a look at 'perfect fit blinds'. They clip in to the window frame so if you have the window open they don't blow about. Mine are some branded 'Intu' which are not as cost effective as the 'perfect fit blinds'.

We have put frosted film onto the lower windows in our living room that look out into the street. It's quite easy to apply and looks quite smart, it was from an eBay seller iirc and a year on still looks good.

what's wrong with nets ?? lets the light in and people can't see ... might be my age ...lol :)

A lot of people hear net curtains and think all frilly and fancy. In my lounge (street facing and with sun for most of the day) I have very plain nets as they stop people just being able to look in from the street, but do not stop any light. I then have full curtains for night time. In fact the only place I dont have nets is the kitchen as that isnt really overlooked.

Very good quality. Had them for about 2.5 years now. With this brand, the little plastic handle at the top in the middle of the blind's framing is how you tilt the blinds. To raise or lower them you just pull/push the white section at the bottom. I must have opened them hundreds of times without issue.

They are easy to remove too. I had some window film installed on a lot of my rear windows to help reduce the temperature in the house during the summer (new-ish build house) so I removed them whilst the film was installed and replaced them myself in a few minutes. they have a plastic clip with a flat metal part that slips behind the windows frame.

Here is another pic of of the ones on our patio doors in the kitchen.

I think you can see the light is on when outside. When the sun is against the blinds, you can see a tiny bit of light coming through the holes in each slat (you can see that in my picture above actually) and a tiny bit of light bleed around the edges. We have blackout curtains in our master bedroom (my first pic with the gold coloured blinds) as the sun hits that room first thing in the morning and wakes me up on a summers day.

ah ok thanks. I think the blackout option ie when u can't see a light thats on from the outside is a good option. thats what im looking for probably.

@psd99 - ah it looks like they do a roller blind in the blackout option. I did not know that :) I prefer the Venetian style so that I can still have full privacy with some light coming in.

ah ok I see

will check that out thanks but I agree with u about the venetian also they look mint

@psd99 pic of my ensuite with them closed and the door shut (sun is facing these blinds atm). They do look really good but deffo not something you want in a bedroom to block out sun. At 4:30am on a summers day my bedroom is very light.
