Pro Cycling Discussion 2020

Funniest moment of the day for me was when James Knox went past and I gave him a "Go On James" and he just looked around thinking wtf how does someone actually know me. don't think he expected a brit up there today. I will try to get some pictures up over next few days but wifi here is awful.
Haha awesome, shame you don't have a video of it! :D

Listening to luke Rowe geraint Thomas podcast and they were talking about the world's. Luke was told by his coach it was his hardest ever day on the bike. 470TSS FOUR HUNDRED AND SEVENTY. And he missed the last lap. That is insane.
Insane, but what a ride from him. Fantastic work to be still there later in the race trying to get Pidcock in the front. Unsure what happened to Tom on the end part but he did well for his first WC's. Plenty of footage of him riding well in the later laps (just not the final) from the one I watched (Think it was BBC2 footage).

There's a good writeup/comparison on Velonews about it and dives into the data and numbers. One of the Strava pics there (think with Stravastix data) has Valgrens ride with a TSS of over 500. That final gap on the climb created by Alaphilipe at around an estimated 7.4-8w/kg for 3 and a half minutes. Crazy numbers.

Word is Thomas won't start this morning. G, Froome and Bernal at the Vuelta then?
Gutted for G. He's ridden well but not one of his good years really.

Would be fantastic to see Froome finding some form/fitness and ride a joint leader alongside Bernal but think I'm just being hopeful. Bernal has been really quite disappointing so far this year, think I've kinda gone off him this year. Especially while other of the Ineos team have been incredible and had great years!

Yeah that made me chuckle when I read it , gotta love TdG. Although there will always be the 'race to win at all times' brigade out there , I find it curiously malevolent and mischievously delightful
He's always been a great follow/watch/read as comes across as this really humble and quiet guy... But with a great sense of humour (track him down on Twitter in the off season), then other times really speaks his mind and isn't afraid of honestly doing so.

Yates out of giro with cv and roubaix cancelled. Wonder how much longer we'll get racing for. Vuelta going to be cancelled with the way Spain is currently.
The way things are going I'm not going to be surprised if the Giro doesn't finish. #sadpanda

I noticed it during the race the other day but this pic shows it quite well https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/co...-and-fuglsang-after-giro-ditalia-mechanicals/
I'd heard about his accident but not just how bad it was! Now I've seen that picture I can't not see his position even worse than recalling before! :o

Not quite sure what the position of his shoulder is about, he broke his collarbone but it looks more than that? The reports you read, his injuries where all limbs (why is left arm has always been covered since), but maybe the injuries from the couple of crashes are just leading to that awkward positition. Horrible for him the things he's been through, just hope it's not permanent and the amazing form he has, he can revisit/revive in future with more luck and opportunities.

Eugh that crash at schelderprijs was horrible. Good win by caleb though. Made it look easy.
Do we know how long races stay on the GCN Racepass app? I'm enjoying the Giro but getting slowly behind as unable to watch 'highlights' so having to just skip through stages to find the climbs and such to kinda make my own in the limited time I have to watch (<1 hour per night).

Just wondering if I skip a bunch of the middle Giro stages to watch some of the other races, like Schelder & LBL (although I'm now on Giro stage 7 so already passed a few I could have skipped!).

Think a long time. All the tour stages are still there.
Thanks, really helps me - as I've just continued to watch the Giro. Almost getting caught up, just trying to ignore the other race chatter in here lol! :D

Giro was great to watch yesterday. Proper slugging match. Almeida showing he can battle but its going to be a very hard last week for everyone.
He's been pretty incredible, riding really well for a youngster and QS have been pretty phenominal about still 'doing their thing' on the front while still having Knox and (I think it is) Hodeg with him still in the mountains? Think Almedia rode for Axeon before but never really heard anything about him until the Giro. What else has he ridden with DQS?

@Roady nothing standout from him beyond U23 until now.
He took both U23 TT and RR champs in Portugal last year. He was also 1st on GC at Baby Giro 2018 and won U23 LBL 2018.
For his first GT that really was something special. 15 days in the Pink jersey wasn't it? Pretty remarkable for a team like DQS really to have a team like that able to suddenly do so well supporting a GC contender late into a 3rd week, while still having a massive impact in the shorter/sprint stages. Maybe didn't quite get the stage results they deserved or where capable of either. The riding that final stage was pretty awesome too, counted at one point they had 4 riders after things had been split apart (admittedly some of them dropping back from breakaway(s)). Mega ride by Ballerini, you see when he got caught from behind and seemed to drop, yet minutes later he was back up and riding for Serry. "Hi lads, I'm back!" - almost as if he'd gone back for a bottle and they just casually caught them back up & straight to the front! :D

Kelderman is a good rider but he’s doing it the boring (and efficient) way
Agreed, unlucky for him it didn't work out but think the better of the 2 Sunwebs got the 2nd place. Incredible riding and a name for the future. Kelderman has had some rubbish luck his whole career which is a shame really.

Itv4 showed the pictures of his post crash and I forgot how horrific it was. The leg break was awful. I think he knows exactly where he is and will be riding into that final week if we get there.
I've not seen pictures of it before, did they show the video footage? Heard a rumour there was some, or maybe it was pictures immediately afterwards. They on highlights? Think I'm going to watch the Vuelta next through ITV4 highlights while it's there. Then back to Racepass for the one day races.

Did watch 3-4 days of full coverage of stages in the latter part of the Giro, Stelvio and Sestriere where great watches. Must go back and watch Sagans win on stage 10 I think it was. TT I started watching long highlights which where ok but wanted more of the footage so running out of time before they covered Hindley & Tao GH switched to full coverage and skipped ahead. Worked well!

'Race highlights' on GCN racepass app work well below the actual full stage coverage so easy to find, 'Long' around 1 hour quite well structured but not great 'catchup' type commentary like others (ITV was great example of this). But the actual footage buffers loads for me over Googlecast, like long 30s buffers sometimes. Turning off cast it plays perfectly on phone, then cast again and away it goes back on TV. Anyone else running it the same? Full footage doesn't have any issue, so it's not my internet.

Giro being brilliantly brutal yet again. Looked absolutely freezing up the top of the stelvio. Thought that ineos should have put an attack on Hindley when he was unable to get his jacket on 8 times in a row. Going to come down to that final time trial again surely!
I was quite surprised how much bad luck he had trying to get that on... Obviously not something he's done much of in WA - rain jackets in the cold and wind! Funny to see Kelderman have similar issues and just bin the jacket. Understand the frustration but these guys know how catching a chill can impact you the next day/two, worth losing a few seconds over...! Thought 'He'll regret that' just before commentary said the same. 'dexterity of a hippo' made me lol. Stupid really, as think that may have really cost him some top end form for the final stages...? Considering that brutal solo ride, he rode well the latter part of the final stage really well, allowing the group to come up and them riding was actually closing the gap quite well so unlikely the cold/chill had affected him still then.

Would be interesting to see how Jai's and the Ineos jackets differed. All Castelli, but same model/zips? Probably just unfamiliarity for him, but I know I for sure won't look at Craft jackets when next after one...

I had a hard day at work yesterday also. Just told my boss I am doing a half day instead and he told me to **** off.

Since it's raining and they don't like the rain these professionals. They should have made them do the 260KM on Zwift. Would be even worse than doing the actual stage and would show these skinny moaners who the boss is.
Hahaha, yeah, or even doubled the stage and said 'anyone not finishing gets a DQ' :D:D:D

To be fair the CPA stepping in was the right thing to do, but using an excuse to boost riders immune systems was a bit lame after everything they've been through already. Also really why they left it so long/late is beyond me. Weather forecasts are generally pretty accurate a few days ahead these days. Plus it was only 'extended' 7km (nothing for the riders) over a long flat stage, so they shouldn't use that. Really looks like the weather was the decider (should have been notified at least a day or so before that it might possibly be shortened?) and the extension possibly the 'trigger' after whatever closed door talks with organisers failed (for them to do a complete U turn on the actual morning!).

Ganna to win this by 30 seconds probably.
Should've put money on that! Wasn't it 32s or something lol

I think you all know my feelings about Ineos but I’m delighted for Geoghehan Hart, what a story.
Agree. Amazing result considering his position after the first stage or two (over 100th down?!).

He's flown under the radar quite well since joining Sky/Ineos after quite a bit of hype before he did. Quality rider and really hope he gets more opportunities going forwards. Although that may mean him leaving for another team if they keep Bernal there...

Wiggins gushing made me cringe. Anyone else!?

Brutal finish today.

https://www.strava.com/activities/4255003483#2756576255178878994 :o :o :o

I've not watched the stage yet but that climb looks insane. Ended up finding that ride from Harry Tanfields (who is a great follow if not done already) and Robert Gesink (another great follow).

Edit: Check Sepp elevation total for the year.

He was good on the motorbike riding along with the riders. But he's not a studio pundit no.
Yeah, he's good for some of his insights and the on the bike stuff was great, but for commentary and studio really not.

All or nothing for carapaz, carthy and Martin today. Going to be interesting what happens. Can't see anything but jumbo control after yesterday's show of force, although they were whittled down a little bit they still had 4 riders supporting roglic to the end.
Incredible finish really and we've seen such an attacking end to all of the Tours this year, it's been fantastic for lots of fresh/new/young riders coming through alongside many of those established names getting some quality results. We'll not forget wins by Ganna, Hirschi, Dan Martin, Hugh, Kwaito, Sollers, Demare, Sam Bennett, Sagans and then things like Roglic's loss, Alaphilipe crashing and getting caught on the line while also some fantastic wins from him. It's been emotional!

Amazing if odd season we've had. 3 great grand tours all won by less than a minute! Here's hoping for a more normal year next year just to get all the big races back. Although this last few months has been amazing!
Totally agree, it's been great and has really shown in some respects how adaptable some riders are to the change in routine/seasons over others. But the only downside it has been utterly rubbish for my quality sleep patterns, just to try and get the time to watch it all lol ;) :D

I’m happy for Rog - he’s won lots of fans with his response to the TdF via LBL and the Vuelta. Carapaz looked to be flying away and made up half his deficit with half the climb left and then the gap stabilised. I guess he ran out of steep bits to accelerate on

Eurosport can have a rest now!
Agreed, I was slightly devastated for Rog at the end of the TDF for it to finish the way it did. Although his response to Pog's win and the way he reacted/raced afterwards really did make me like him even more. He seemed more human as had been quite robotic before then, in the way he came across in interviews and way he rode. I dare say he's won more fans after the TDF than he actually had when riding it, which for a 'loser' is a superb thing to see really. To me it's come across like he's huminised more since in his personality, reactions and just overall riding. Like he has ridden with more heart and wasn't afraid of reacting or risking a little more than before.

One thing I've not missed this year from not watching much ES (watched the GT's through ITV) is Sean Kelly and Carlton Kirby. Back to them now to catch up with some of the monuments and classics this week and bored of them already.

@Roady I can't listen to Sean, he just drones on as if he has a peg on his nose too. Almost like that racing pundit weirdo ****.
Agreed. His drone of an Irish accent really bores me! Fantastic rider in his time, deserves all the respect for that and what he's done for cycling since, but he's no pundit/commentator. It would be different if he brought anything other than his name an reputation to it, as he's nothing more than a +1. Doesn't really bring anything to actual content.

“Yes well erm” then repeat what Carlton said. Needs to go!
He's a parrot at times! Bizarre why he gets so much airtime/coverage when you consider how good many of the ex Pro's are. Not even the good ones, I mean look at how good Dan Lloyd is and any of the GCN lot. Think I even prefer Wiggins, although he adds just as little, at least he added some humour. I had high hopes that Matt Stephens would replace him when he left GCN to work for ES but he's hardly done anything. He did more when working for GCN!

It’s Israel again. Interesting few snippets in one of his recent video on the UK 25TT where he said he smashed Archibald for power but lost by a lot in speed. Maybe he can find some aero gains over the next 6 weeks
Is that on his YouTube 'Thighsclub' channel? Have been meaning to subscribe and catch up as keep hearing it mentioned. Any good? Hope CV19 doesn't put him back too much.

Pro season pretty much over now anyway. Not sure I've wanted to watch anything 'new' the last week or two. Any suggestions? CX is kinda ok but generally find it 'boring' to watch (ok, more 'not as interesting' as road racing). I generally wait for the Classics.

Short tenure for Ellingworth at Bahrain Mclaren, guessing he'll go somewhere else with some money. Israel start up perhaps?

https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/rod-ellingworth-leaves-bahrain-mclaren/
Not sure how I missed this until I saw it here. Quite a surprise but equally with Mclaren stepping away from the team & the pay cuts that much of the riders and staff had I can't say I'm surprised. He's a very 'driven' type of guy, so I wouldn't imagine the money being the chief reason, but I bet losing some key riders and support staff because of it would be good reason for him. Shame really as they did well with Landa in the TDF and put in some good performances (Tratnik & Teuns both stand out. Colbrelli too).

Cav getting another year at dqs, hoping he can get a bit of form and at least battle it out at the front in a few races even if not the tdf.
Really pleased about this, but struggle to understand why they 'want' him. They've such a strong team, with existing sprinters, that I find it hard to 'place' him in any key races. I really doubt he'll get a GT place unless they do something drastic to their roster, but equally with the classics team they have I don't see a place for him there either, he's never really stood out too much as a classics rider. He's no leadout - sprint is all kick, he blows up easily and too small for others to follow (think GCN or Lanterne Rouge have a video mentioning this I possibly watched?)
