Problem exiting Quake 4

When I finish playing Quake 4 and exit to windows I don't get my screen (desktop or start bar) back. I just get a completely blank screen with a mouse icon.

I can execute keyboard commands but more often that not I have to reset the machine. Does anybody know what is causing this?
 
I have adsactly the same problem. In the quake 4 demo and CoH retail.

I don't know what causes it but to stop me having to reboot after a gaming session I put the "show windows desktop" icon in the corner of the screen, so when I got the all black screen + cursor as you described, I randomly clicked in the corner till I got it and my desktop returns.
 
Yeah, sounds like a graphics card driver issue to me. Try another one and see if it still does it - start the process of elimination :)
 
I have the latest one installed - and have performed a roll back, but nothing still really happens. I have also installed an update to v1.3.... :(
 
Another way of getting your desktop back is to alt/crtl/del , file, new task then type explorer and enter. That will get your desktop back but i dunno how to stop it : :(
 
Dunno if it'll help, but I had a problem with BF2 still hanging on for a good couple of minutes after I quit the game (BF2 music still playing, windows running at a snails pace). I used to use ctrl+alt+del and quit out of the BF2 process, but once I went up to 2GB RAM it stopped happening altogether.
Maybe it's just taking time to flush from your PC's memory?
Unless you already have 2GB of course.
