Problem: Since adding GPU to water loop can't get screen to turn on

Ive just added a water block to my graphics card then reinstalled it and now I cant post or at the very least my monitor is not turning on despite it receiving power.

All the lights on my mobo light up so it would appear that it is booting normally but my graphics card does not seem to be sending a signal to my monitor to switch on.

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

obvious things first but CHECK them!

Is the graphics card right in the pci express slot. Make sure you cannot see any of the metal contacts.

Check your DVI cable is pushed firmly in to the DVI socket on the GPU and screw it in.

Both these have caught me out at least once.

Yeah its in the top pci e slot. what metal conatcts are you refering to?

i think he means make sure the card is all the way in the slot.

Another one thats got me before, have you put the power lead/leads into the card all the way?? (or at all, also got me once)

Also i had the same prob on a build i did for a mate i forgot one of the power leads to the mobo. When i turned it on it seemed to boot but nothing on the screen. It turned out to be the 4pin power lead on the mobo, worked fine after that!!1

Im using the 8 pin lead to the mobo plus the 24 pin. The other thing I've done is install a new E8600 cpu at the same time as the gpu. But that shouldnt cause any issues.

you getting any POST beeps when you power up?

Is the CPU seated properly (doubt thats it but you never know)?

Have you pulled a jumper off the mobo when changing stuff over?

running out of ideas now..... er......

Have you got the right bios for that chip? did you have any overclock on when you changed the chip?

Im assuming the cpu is seated ok tbh.

However I did have an overclock on the cpu, i forgot to set to defaults. gpu was at stock.

Might be a bit of work, but it might be worth putting the old cpu in and seeing if it posts. if it does then it could be the new chip not liking the oc?

Other then that i'm out of ideas at the mo. Let me know how you get on though! Good luck!

And you have cleared the CMOS haven't you? I mean using the jumper on the CMOS reset pins, and also removing the Bios battery for a while?

I'm sure you have, but worth checking!

Other than that, does the new waterblock stop the card insterting fully?

No havent cleared the CMOS or removed the battery. I'll give it a go.

No the block doesnt seem to inhibit insertion in any way that I can see.

As an afterthought the old heatsink fan plugs into the pcb, so now that its unplugged due to the water block could this be affecting the card on start up?

doubt it, but try pluging the fan back in if you can still get to it?

Might be wrong but dont better asus boards rest the cmos if the oc is bad? mine does and its a cheaper one?

Another thing to check, is the source on the monitor. This has got me a couple of times and is a little anoying. Also, if you have installed a new CPU, check that you have the CPU power cable installed.

Monitor source is correct. gpu and cpu are water cooled.

Screen still wont switch on.

Sounds like you havent plugged in the power leads to the actual gfx card? The 8 pin and 24 pin to mobo wont be enough to power that hungry 280.

Not to sound too negative but when my P5N-E SLi did this to me and it wasn't fixed by any of the solutions above it turned out that the mobo was dead. Had it happen to me 3 times with that board, happened again a month ago so I just got a new P5Q.

Best to rule out everything first though ....
