Problem swallowing tablets

I have a real trouble too, stemmed from when I was a young'un and I threw up whilst gagging on one :o

I always encase them in jam if I need to take a pill :D

Stick tablet in gob, swallow. Never had any problems at all and actually find it quite weird that people find it difficult!
What happens when your eating sweets or something? Do you have the same problems?

No! and that's the other thing my Doc said, you probs swallow food bigger than the tablet. Its purely psychological.

Interesting.

So when people say they cant swallow tablets, is it that you can't physically swallow a tablet because it is... a tablet? Or doesn't it go down when you do swallow.

I'm interested, as i said i havn't met any who can't.

I had that problem before but now I can do it with a sip of liquid. Just relax your tongue/mouth when you do and pretend you don't have it on your mouth. It's clenching cos you want to make it go down which causes it not to.

I agree its psychological, if you say you cannot swallow them then you wont.

I think this applies to a lot of things really, if you say you cannot, you will not.

I think that if I was expected to swallow anything solid without chewing I would have had a problem. I don't think it is just because it is a tablet.

I'm now trying to answer your last question without giggling - I'm quite drunk and reading things in the wrong way completely :p However, back to the plot... I used to try and swallow tablets with a drink of water and just not be able to, as soon as the water touched the back of my throat, I'd gag!!!

The best technique to take tablets apparently is to tilt your head forward not back, the tablet will then float to the back of your mouth, then you just have to swallow.

Read that somewhere recently.

Mine "psychological" thing is my experience of throwing up when I was a child taking an aspirin. I find that when a tablet comes out my mouth and throat become all sticky for some reason and all saliva seems to just leave my mouth. So I use jam to convince my body it's just a sweet :p

I've taken so many caffeine pills since I bought a 92 pack several months ago, I don't even need to put it on my tongue, I can just chuck it straight into my throat. :)

Practice I guess. :)

i used to chew them and then drink lots of coke. The taste is do disgusting. Now i can do it perfectly

Your not supposed to chew them unless it says to, because they have a coating on them which ensures they get down your throat and into your stomach before the medication gets released.

I've always had problems swallowing them, lately I've had to take more due to a reoccurring chest infection so I'm not too bad now.

I only take one at a time and put it as far back on my tongue as possible and then have a tiny amount of milk to wash it down. This may sound strange but I can't swallow them if someone is talking to me!

Just curious about the OP's name, I thought it was against the rules to advertise personal ventures on these forums, even if it is just a name?

it can take me up to 3 pints of water to swalow my small hayfever tablet :( but i can swallow big tablets in no time

I had this problem when i was younger and now i take the tabs and flick my head back to get them right at the very back of my throat then drink some water and it can't really go any place else but down and it always works.
