Problem with 5970....again

Try swapping the bigger monitor back, see if the issue reappears, then try the other output on the card.

Well i put the bigger monitor back in, but i changed the wires around so i got the cable that came with the 19". And so far no problems i think everything is ok:D

Edit: Scrap what i just said the problem is coming back again, so it looks like its the monitor.

So it happens on both inputs of the graphics card?

My suggestion would be taking the monitor to a friends and testing it there. Just to confirm it definately is the monitor.

It's got to be the monitor surely??. 3 seperate cards not working is beyond bad lluck. I had a XFX 5970 fully working, but sent it back and swapped it for a sapphire 5970 - because it was a bit cheaper, and i hear they are "better quality" brands - that's just what ive heard though. I'm thinking of selling my 3 month old Sapphire though (keep changing my mind!) as i plan on a new system in the autumn/winter

You say that, but someone earlier in the thread said it was the graphics card. Until you rule out each part thoroughly you can't say for certain.

Right ive tried the big monitor on the downstairs computer for the last 2 hours and its perfectly fine. But as soon as i put it back on my pc the problem comes back within 15-20 mins.
Im currently using the 19" screen and its perfectly fine, i just dont know what to make of it:confused::p

My pc is using the xfx ATI 5970 Black Edition.
Downstairs pc is using BFG 8800gtx OCX Nvidia.

It could be resolution related, but honestly two hours isn't a long enough test. What PSU do you have?

Try Furmark with the 19" and see if it arifacts or crashes. Use the latest version, 1.8.2 I think and the multi GPU mode. You will need to run it for more than 5 minutes. I tend to run it until the temp level reaches the other side and levels out completely. Maybe 30-60 minutes.

Also try Vantage Loops and ATi Tool.

Hmm, should be fine, note your vantage scores as well. Low scores could indicate it is under performing and imply a power issue. But try what I suggested, you really need to rule out the graphics card, data cable and monitor completely.

Err? What is that showing? Doesn't look like it has been open long.

Just the temps really i ran furmark for 20 mins and then checked gpu-z and themps were 71 is that high?

Also i dont quite understand what you want me to do, have i got to run ati tool and click scan for artifacts, and while thats running try furmark(mult gpu) program at the same time.

EDIT: I see what u mean about the gpu-z doh! just too another pic.

Temps look fine. What you are trying to do is to stress the card to see if there are any problems under load.

You need to run Furmark on its own in Multi GPU mode for some length of time. I'd recommend an hour. Leave GPU-Z open, with the log to file ticked and the sensor page open. This will show you the values after.

If that doesn't show up any problems, close Furmark, run the latest version of ATi Tools. Again using GPU-Z to monitor temps and voltages in the background with the log box ticked. Use ATi tools scan for artifacts option for an hour and see if it picks up anything.

If it passes that then I'd say that it is either a monitor, cable or windows/driver issue. But at least you can rule out the hardware to some degree.

Well it passed your tests, the temps ranged from 69-74. I just cant figure it out. I formatted my pc a few days ago and done a fresh install see if that would fix it.
Ive updated my graphics drivers from 10.4 to 10.6, still doesnt work.

Hmm, well that would imply the problem is elsewhere.

Have you tried the both data cables on the 19" monitor and both DVI outputs?

It really does look like the larger monitor is at fault, even if it did work for a short time on another PC. What monitor is the larger one? What inputs does it have?

This is where im gonna sound noobish, ive been plugging them into the white socket which is the dvi im guessing. But you want me to try the blue socket is that correct?

White is DVI, blue is VGA. Without using a converter, you can't use the VGA. The 5970 will have two DVI outputs and another small mini-displayport. Try both the DVI outputs on the back of the 5970 and both the data cables with the 19" monitor.

This will rule out one of the data cables being faulty as well as a dodgy DVI port on the 5970. Make sure all the cables are fully seated when you try this to rule out a lose connection.
