Hi guys my friend has a HP Pavilion dv6 with both AMD M880G ATI Mobility Radeon HD4250 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD5470.

Up until a week ago this laptop was running really well, but after a windows update Windows 7 starts up,you hear the starting chime but all you get is a black screen. If we go into safemode and disable the HD5470 then Win 7 starts up okay but when you reboot the HD5470 is re-enabled and all you get is a black screen.

We have tried system restore too way before the update but it still does the same.

Any ideas please?

Sounds like it might have tried to install a different GPU driver which isn't playing nicely. Try uninstalling the drivers, booting back up normally with the 5470 active, and then reinstalling the working drivers.

I gave that a go and all I end up with is a black screen. The only way I can get to the desktop is to disable the HD5470.

Which method would you use to completely uninstall the drivers then install new drivers ?

can you do a roll back? restore to a point before you updated and then had the problems?

Then next time you do a win update. See what it wants to update and don't update that particular update patch?

I have tried going back in time way before any updatesand still no joy.

My next move is to do a full factory restore and see if that works.

Could the HD5470 have failed and is causing this problem ?

Not on this dv6 (if its the one I think it is). It's too old. They still shipped with factory CDs. If all else fails, I'd be inclined to fully wipe and stick windows 7 vanilla on and start again. or, get back into safe mode with networking and see if ATI have a driver on their website (or grab the HP one from their support site).
