Our bedroom suffers from mould growing on the walls and sometimes even on the underside of the mattress (laminate flooring). We have the window open most of the time but this doesn't help much.

We're considering replacing the laminate with carpet as it get's very cold in the winter, will this make things better or worse or no difference even?

Also does anyone have any advice on what we can do to keep the moisture levels down in the room?

Sounds like your room is too damp, is it just that room that is bad?

p.s it's mould :p

Problem with living in the basement of a 160yr old building I guess. The spare bedroom (next door) suffers from it to some degree but nowhere near as much

I always get confused between mould/mold

Mold is a Market Town in North Wales where I used to live, Mould is a smelly, dirty thing that rots things away..Hmm, wait a minute...

oh wow, didn't realise you could 'cure' it like that, I assume you'd need to knock the house down and rebuild, will look into a de-humidifier for our bedroom, mould stinks :(

I have the same problem, though not as bad. I know the guy from downstairs bought a dehumidifier and it made no difference. In the end he had to move out, and I'm doing the same.

Mould spores also pose a significant health risk to susceptible people. It is amazing how much moisture the human body gives out, so more ventilation would be the short term answer. The only way to get rid of dampness in basements is to go down the expensive full tanking of the rooms

Mould will only grow if there is moisture.

Even if you think that the room is damp proofed, it can't be if there is mould in Summer.

Has the room been properly 'tanked' ? Keeping it warm will help as it will help any damp surfaces dry out.

The outside walls have had damp proofing.

After looking up what tanking is (and finding a link on how to tank a room for making into a wet room) I seriously doubt the room is 'tanked'

We have a similar problem in our bedroom at the moment, when we moved into our flat we had quite a lot of wet rot and got a specialtist company out to carry our repairs and damp proofing but mould has now started to appear in the area adjacent to this, every morning we wake up and there is loads of condensation on our double glazing window and the smell in our room is stinking, the main worry is that fact our baby is still in his cot in the same room as us just now and i dont know if this mould is dangerous to him, i spent the weekend cleaning up the affected area with good old dettol spray but the smell was still lingering, looks like were gonna have to get the experts back out again and see what they say :(

you cant remove mould with dettol , you either need proper mould spray or possibly bleach.

you cant simply paint over mould either it will eat the paint.

mould spores are dangerous you need to be especially careful when cleaning mould or the spores will spread all over the room/rest of house and possibly inside of you.

black mould is very dangerous and can kill (not all mould that is black in colour is the toxic black mould)
