Had mother on the phone this morning panicking about a problem with their Dell computer.
It shows the Dell logo then straight to this screen;

I'm not there myself, but anyone have any suggestions?

Well if you are seeing this straight after the Dell boot time logo then it could be a number of things causing it. It isn't getting as far as loading the OS, so hard drive fault is a likely contender - either faulty or corrupted.

I would go into the bios and see if it is showing the hard drive(s) correctly, if it is then perhaps reset the bios to default and try tapping F8 into safe mode or failing that, boot off the windows disk to try run chkdsk /f /r or system restore. If the hard drive does not show up in the bios or the windows repair disk can't detect an OS then you know what your problem is :)

Could be numerous other problems though, faulty memory or possibly even PSU - but my money is on HDD corruption.

Let us know how you get on

Is it just the "arrow" and "2" or is there a bright white spot as well (or is that your flash?)

Graphics board loose?

Have they changed the input source via a hard button on the monitor? Had this happen to a client with a Dell pc once where the monitor would show the logo and then switch itself off.

Or the cable graphics cable could be loose

Unfortunately I'm not there until Christmas Eve and my brother needs docs off it for work. So they have taken it to the pc repair place in town. Waiting to hear how they got on.

Ah man, not too bad then but still - should have bought it to my shop I wouldn't have charged for removing a memory card from a slot!

Anyway, glad it's nothing serious :)

Took them a while to find it by the sounds of things - had the HDD tested all night apparently.
