Problems booting new machine

Hey, after building my new machine and powering up I get a message saying:
"Reboot or insert proper boot device"
I thought maybe I just need to boot the windows cd instead.

So I went into bios and changed the boot prioties so cd_dvd drive is first. However I still get the same message.

I'm using the Foxconn P67A-S mobo and a samsung spin point F3 HDD.
Also the smart LED says "AE" which is a bit worrying. The manual doesn't explain what this means and Im having trouble finding out what to do on the internet.

Also the bios does detect all the drives, so it can clearly see them?

Sorry two questions in one:
Also having to use stock cooler (makes me feel dirty) because cooler master came with a fail screw.

But cpu temp seems high in the bios to me. Seems to start at 35 ish and creeps up to 44. Bit worried about it, not sure if it would go higher if I left it longer..
Is this normal? :s

Thanks in advance :)

temps are fine, but double check you have mounted the cooler correctly, and give it a small wiggle.

Double make sure the boot priority is correct, insert the windows disk, and it should just say "press any key to boot from disk"

Hmm I get the same message every time, dvd is set to #1 hdd is set to #2 also I've tried to boot from usb. Always:
"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert a boot devuce into connected media and press a key"
Ive tried pressing f7 and selected boot device from there.

Couple of things to double check.

1. You have acutally inserted the Windows disc into the dvd drive?

2. If you have, make sure your dvd drive is in sata port 1 on the motherboard, your hard disk being in "0" some boards are funny about that.

Is it a genuine Windows disc you are using or one a friend gave you?

Yeah on this board it seems sata ports go from 1 to 6. Hdd is on 1, dvd on 2 it says the same in bios too.
And yeah I guess you could say its from a friend xD.
Ive tried the disk in other machines and it works fine, I may try my win xp disc. See if it makes a difference.
Any ideas on what "AE" means? Some sort of post error code?

It's different for all motherboards, they all have unique errors. Is it an LCD board on the mobo itself, I had an old Abit board like that... handy :)

It will tell you in the mobo manual... like you said, try booting from an XP disc or another OS disc. Try copying the windows files onto a usb pen drive from another pc... then set first boot device to "removable usb" or whatever your mobo names it as... that should definitely boot.

when i did that build, i plugged the dvd drive into one of the angled sata ports, the HDD into another random angled port. and the SSD into one of the yellow sata ports.

the 6950 was so long it actually covered the led readout, but I could see the red glow from it, but not what it said, the build worked first time, so just left it.

Lol nice one, I still get the same error.
Tried didabling all boots except usb drive, still no luck.
Could be something to do with cmos? How do you reset that?

Yeah now you mention it i haven't had any bleeps, i assumed because there is that smart LED that it didn't have bleeps.
Can you believe the manual doesn't even list the error codes :/

thought id give you all an update,
just done cms reset and now im back to square one. (original problem)
Quick question is ac 97 important? I cant figure out where it goes.

Quick question is ac 97 important? I cant figure out where it goes.

It's for your front panel audio... if you wan't the functionality of the audio ports on the case then hook it up... it is usually the HD audio that you connect though, AC97 isn't used much now. The two should be stuck together.

It goes into the F_Panel_Audio header on mobo. It varies on different boards, it's usually green and has one pin missing.

ok cool I put the hd audio one in.
I tried my old hard drive, it manages to boot it. But I still cant get it to boot from any other device. Cant even wipe old hdd :(

Sorry for bump, but ill just let anyone who was reading this know.
I managed to sort it out by switching power cables and sata cables/ports around on the hdd and the dvd drive.
Not entirely sure exactly what fixed it xD
But it works! and im happy! :D

Thanks for the help guys.
problem solved!
