Hi guys, maybe someone has had similar problems and can help.

I've only ever tried setting up xbox live once before and i thought it wouldnt work as the cable wouldn't stretch so I thought if I run the xbox cable from the xbox to a coupler which would connect to the cable coming out from my computer, but it didn't work.

I've now moved my room around a little to try again and I'm able to unplug the ethernet cable running into my computer and plug it into my xbox, but when I run the test it still says "disconnected" Why is this? Surely it would work, as it's just the same as plugging the cable you get with the xbox into the router.

I was considering buying the xbox 360 wireless adapter, but I don't want to blow £60 on something just to get the same "disconnected" message.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The cable that I had going from the router to the computer, is now going straight from the router to the xbox as I couldn't be bothered putting another hole in the wall to have a cable for each.

So it's pretty much like i've plugged my xbox into the router.

Sorry to bump, but does anyone have any ideas? I'm going to pick up a wireless adapter after work and don't want to waste 60 quid if it doesn't work.

possibly the cable, try another before you go wireless as its crap. One of my 5 xbox's since launch developed a problem whereby it couldnt communicate via the ethernet port.

If your doing manual ip setup then i presume you know all your info inclusive of DNS?

Should be something like

192.168.1.x
255.255.255.0
router ip (gateway) eg 192.168.1.1

DNS info should be available on your routers status page

I find the 360 can be annoying like this sometimes after anything happens to the network connection, even though i know everything is fine it just doesn't want to reconnect or repair the connection etc, like the other day it just didn't want to get the ip even though the router was working fine so in the end i set it manually as i always had a permanent ip on the router for it anyway due to port forwarding, it worked fine then and i suspect this will reduce these type of silly 'fake' problems.

Yeah, the only thing would be the actual IP of the xbox in the settings, would I just assign it something in the router's range that isn't already being used?

When I get home after work i'll try poking a bigger hole through the wall and use the cable that came with the xbox.

Did you reboot the router?
TBH (as said above) I'd set the IP etc manually (I assign static IP's to all my networked kit, it saves a lot of hassel in the long run, and it connects quicker)

See if you can stick the cable directly from the modem into the 360 and if that works that will show there's an issue with the router.
