problems with grahpics card

Have jus got of the phone to him, not gunna be able to do anything with regards to using his graphics card or psu till saturday now, we are both on different shifts! So that's out of the window!!! Soo frustrating!!!!! :(
I need a new PSU anyways because when I can afford it I will be getting a decent graphics card, so will need a decent psu?!

If he's going for a 'decent' spec gfx card soon, and also assuming the PSU lasts a good 5 years, would he be better off with a better & higher spec PSU, namely 650-750W?

As long as it's a single card, a reliable decent 400-500w PSU is good enough. You really only need more if you're thinking of having more than one card. The OCZ will power even the high ends with no problem.

I'd want a PSU much bigger than that one up there. That's one hell of a power hungry board you've bought.

I'd say 650w min and a good brand like Bequiet ! or something.

well i would be looking to spend about 70-80 at the most? but i would also like quality for that price!? if thats possible.
i am with spacemonkey though, i have been told if i am going to upgrade to a high end graphics card i should be running a high wattage PSU?

thanks for your opinion. would it not be better to have too much than not have enough though then have to spend more money upgrading to a higher wattage PSU?
and on another note if i am to buy a new PSU, when it comes to the cables i am abit of a neat freak and like everything to look tidy any recomendations on a PSU what has good tidy cable management?

Full future proof for a good few generations but just over your budget:LINK HERE

I've got the XXX Edition, which when offer is only £10 more, and modular, best PSU I've ever had, well chuffed with it so far, but you can get a 650W Corsair or XFX for about £70-£80, have a look on OCUK if you do need to keep the budget down :)

I would've thought that OCZ 550w was more than enough. The OCZ Z series is actually pretty good compared to OCZ's past offerings. It can even power a GTX 580 or AMD 7970...

That board he has is an uber board with loads going on. It was £350 at launch. Also couple in the heavily overclocked I7 960 and so on.

Then add a GPU.. It soon adds up.

that PSU looks right up my street spacemonkey i am sure i can stretch to accommodate that quality. could u explain why it has to be a good quality PSU and wattage jus for future reference if needs be?
i am certainly learning that the motherboard is a bit of a beast lol it certainly does all add up for my little 450w!
so do we think this is the cause of my problems then?

Because if your PSU fails at some point (and there's always a chance a component can fail however small) then you want it to die gracefully and not take your whole machine with it.

Cheap PSU's have a nasty habit of taking boards and CPU's with them and even more :(

A PSU is based on its amps. Amps are what total up to give a high wattage.

However, most cheap psus are rated on their utter maximum peak power (IE where they blew up in testing).

A good PSU will have a single rail with very high amps, or multiple high amp rails. When put under load a PSU can combine rails to provide a safe output.

You also want 80+ efficiency as this generally means your PSU will remain cool and quiet. Crap psus create a lot of heat which is wasted electricity and just ends up either in your case or being pumped around your room. Either way it is money going up in smoke as it's waste heat that is taking power to create.

TBH I would spend £100 on a PSU and I would look elsewhere and get an Enermax. They are, put simply, the finest PSUs money can buy.

OCUK seems to be very expensive for psus right now. I have absolutely no idea why.

What's the maximum you want to spend on it? You'll struggle to find guys on this forum recommending a 'cheap' PSU I'm afraid.

thanks for the info, but i am really on a tight budget. spent 600+ in the last week alone!! http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-005-XF&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1497

this seems ideal to me but obviously i dont know a lot do i lol?
i know on forums you are going to get a lot of different people's opinions clashing. but really just want a safe, half decent PSU which will accommodate my needs?

That's what they all say. Then they skimp on PSU, then they come back crying their PSU took a dump and took their hardware with it.

It's up to you mate, but I wouldn't buy a PSU from OCUK. Their prices are crazy on PSUs which is odd because on other stuff they are very competitive.
