hey

ive just after putting together my new pc and when i boot up i get this msg;

'Reboot and Select a proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key'

i tried resetting and going into the BIOS of my Asus P6T SE mobo and changed the booting sequence so that my DVD ROM is 1st.

i save + exit, reboot (with a copy of Windows XP in the drive) but yet again i keep getting the same message.

i happened to notice that during the booting sequence, the screen will pop up with some text at the top and then 'Detecting Drives; Done; Drive not found' before clearing within seconds and giving the message above. in the BIOS however, it is picking up the make and model of my HD and DVD ROM.

does anyone know how i resolve my problem so i can boot from the DVD ROM and install an OS?

cheers!

EDIT - i've tried all the SATA cables and checked the cd on another computer and they are not the problem
EDIT2 - the BIOS is noticing both my Samsung HD and Sony Optical DVDRW both with model numbers + i checked the SATA controller and it is already set to IDE.

first of all i would check the power and sata cables to see if they are seated propely and if that don't work change the sata cable! and make sure the hard drive is showing in the bios!

Double check the connections on the dvd drive, can you check the disc in another machine.

Sorry for stating the obvious but make sure your optical drive is properly connected. I did the same with mine. If that doesnt work try the other connection on the cable, and if that doesnt work try another cable.

the only other thing you can do if you can't get it to work is upgrade to windows 7 that wil have all the sata drivers needed on the disc!

but how do i install the drivers if i cant get the pc to boot from the DVD ROM ? :)

is it maybe to do with me having a 2002 Windows XP original that doesnt have my SATA drivers on it that makes it unable to read the disk?

when i add the cd into the drive it does seem to try read it by bringing it up to speed.

it is booting from dvd rom drive so to speak but windows in xp has not the sata drivers to read the hard drive i had this problem with a abit motherboard! i had to get the sata drivers from the abit but i don't think asus do them any more! but i could be wrong!
i think the best thing to do is nip over to asus fourms where they can advise you better!

You dont need SATA drivers for booting from CD.
You arent anywhere near that point sadly.
If the bios cannot recognise your DVDRW then nothing will recognise it, drivers or otherwise.
Go into the bios and see what the bios has successfully detected. It should indicate that your DVDRW drive is connected and will probably list the model number.
If the drive is spinning up then power is unlikely to be the problem.
I would suspect the sata controller is configured to use ACHI mode. Try setting to IDE.

EDIT : A quick google suggests that the no drives detected bit that you mentioned is actually referring to the jmicron IDE controller. Try disabling the controller in the bios.

i checked the SATA controller and it is already set to IDE. i tried changing it to RAID and ACHI to see if it made any difference but to no avail. i've now changed it back to IDE.

i couldnt find the 'jmicron IDE controller' option you were on about. where exactly would i find this?

does anyone else know how i can solve this problem so i can get Windows XP working? i'm trying to get my hands on a copy of Windows 7 to see if that will work but that might be awhile before i can have a go with that cd.

As a test - disconnect the hard drive and try again.
EDIT : Also try reading this : http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=92346

i tried disconnecting the hard drive. powered the pc. went into the BIOS and there was only my DVDRW listed there under SATA 1. saved + exit. same problem.

don't know exactly how disconnecting my HD would solve the problem because if it did work, where would i install windows to ? :)

The purpose is to determine if the bios is actually attempting to boot the optical drive first or whether it is in fact going for the hard disk (despite what you may have selected). The article detailed above gives a clue.
Based on that article, try connecting the hard disk to SATA 1 and the DVD to SATA 2.

right ok ... well i've set it now so that the HD is SATA 1 and the DVDRW is SATA 2 but i dont think its going to make any difference.

my boot priority will still stay with the DVDRW booting 1st.

will see what happens now
