Problems with new build :(

Hi guys, i'm hoping you can help me with some problems i'm having with a new build.

So today I built my first ever PC, got everything wired up, all seemed to go ok until I turned it on and here's where the problems started.

There's a a high pitched whining noise coming from somewhere, at first I thought it was the PSU but I can't be 100% sure. I've disconnected the dvd drive and harddrive, also disconnected the graphics card too so I dunno. Also, on startup the cpu hsf is making a whirring noise that gradually gets louder and louder to the point were it was unbearable so I had to turn the PC off. Maybe these would be simple fixes but for a first timer they don't seem so easy.

I'm now thinking I'm out of my depth building my own PC as I was expecting everything to go swimmingly!

build list is as follows if needed:
Fractal R3 Case
Antec True Power 650w Modular
Asus M4A79XTD EVO
Sapphire Radeon 5770
Phenom X4 955 (stock cooler/hsf)
1TB WD Caviar Black
XMS3 Corsair RAM 4GB

Go easy on me as i'm a computer nub :P. I've not even got past the bios screen lol but it is nearly 3am and things not going to plan have disheartened me slightly. So any help is appreciated, thanks.

hello and welcome.
Not sure how much help i can be as i only built my first machine about 3 weeks ago, but there won't be many of the regulars around at this time.(i work nights). so i'll give it a go, as my system is very similar.
sounds to me like not everything is plugged in the right place. did you plug both the power cables into the board? (something like 20pin and 8pin)
i think that a high-pitched whirring is most likely coming from the psu, maybe a discrepancy between mobo and psu?

also i have the x4 965 and the stock heatsink is very loud and makes a whirry sound at anything above 60%, which it might be if you are in bios for a while,
Try reseating the ram, as i had problems booting the first time as i didn't lock it in properly.(same RAM as well)
you could try putting your finger on the middle of each fan to stop them and see if they are causing the noise, there could be something stuck in a fan.

sorry i can't give you very technical help but i'm a nub as well.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted.
and check back tomorrow, they are very helpful on the forum.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Sorry that your first build has not gone as smoothly as you hoped. When asked about PC build or pre-built, I always warn people that it's not the building that's the problem, it's if you are prepared to invest time when things go wrong.

However, don't get too disheartened, there are not many member here that haven't had a problematic builds at some stage. So don't panic.

Ok, first thing first. Is the PC actually booting?

Do you have both the CPU 4/8pin ATX and 24pin ATX power connected?

Since you've already ruled out the Video card and HDDs, it does sound like either the voltages are instable or the VRMs on the motherboard. You'll too eliminate the PSU first by run a multimeter to test. It's very easy providing you can get your hands on a multi meter of course. Here's how:

If you can, swap out the PSU for a known working one. You can buy a spare cheap one from a high street vendor or a second hand one.. It's always worth keeping a spare PSU, just in case.

Lastly, as pigardia says above, make sure all your connections are tight and secure.

Have you tried booting it with the side panel off. It might be easier to detect exactly where the sound is coming from, and at what point in the boot process it starts to happen.

Thanks for the welcomes and quick replies everyone. All cables were plugged in fine (well as far as I could tell). So this morning, I opened it up and started taking things out. The high pitch noise is still there and now I'm pretty sure it's the psu :/. Also, the fan on the psu isn't spinning so perhaps the two problems are connected. Looks like i'm going to have to send it back. I haven't got another psu to test the motherboard (typing on a laptop) but now i'm pretty sure it is the PSU.

I still have the problem with the heatsink fan, as soon as I switch it on it revs up louder and louder within the space of a few seconds. I took it off and tried reaseating it but to no avail.

They are all new components and I didn't account for anything going wrong as I wrongly thought everything would just go smoothly :p

Anyway, just thought i'd keep you updated.
Thanks.

.. it does sound like the PSU.. As I said, don't let it get you down.. I doubt it's anything you've done wrong.. it's just bad luck.. Even more the sweeter when you get it all working.. ;)

True, thanks Admiral. I've raised an RMA now so hopefully it will be sorted and returned working! I might still need to post here regarding the heatsink fan though, but one thing at a time eh :)

I have that exact psu. I replaced a corsair for it, and both had a high pitch whining noise. I have the same cpu, ram, and the same brand hdd as you too. Just giving you a bit of confidence to know your not on your own here :D
