Hi all,

Not sure whether this is the right place to post or not but here goes!!!

As a noob to overclocking I have a few questions I was wondering if any of you could help me!

I have tried overclocking my ram so that it runs quicker but I have come across problems, the story is:

I wanted to change is how quick my ram is running because when I boot up, on the bios boot sequence screen it says my ram is running at 533mhz when I have ddr2 800 Ram, I’m not sure if this is right and id like it running at 800 mhz.

When I tried setting user defined speeds in my bios to 4-4-4-12 and 800 mhz and I saved it, it rebooted my machine and there was no signal being sent to the monitor but the machine is still running with nothing on the monitor, not even the bios boot thing.

Another problem I have had with overclocking is that when I try and change my processor frequency from 266 to 333 (X 9 ??) I come across the same problem as with my ram. There is no signal being sent to the monitor.

My mobo is an abit ab9 quatgt
CPU is a core2Duo e6600
Ram is 2gb Geil ddr2
PSU is a hiper modular 530 watt psu if this is necessary to know (is it not giving out enough power??)

Using stock cooling for the cpu.

I have to be doing something wrong as im a newb! I just don’t know what :P maybe im understanding guides wrong, who knows :S

Any help would be excellent!!

Thanks,
Russ

The ram speed is linked to the fsb speed, so if your fsb is 266 and your ram is 533 it is on a 2:1 mem/fsb ratio (divider). If you then raise the fsb, the ram speed will increase accordingly (2mhz for every 1mhz you raise the fsb). You can change the divider so that it will run at 800 I think, by setting a 3:1 ratio. So if you overclock, make sure that the resulting ram speed (fsb speed x ratio) is not too high.

I have an nvidia 680i board, which lets you run the memory unlinked (you can manually set it at whatever speed you want), so I'm not 100% sure on the dividers for yours, but I think waht I'm saying is right :D

Well I don't have any experience with your specific motherboard but I have the same RAM as you.

Make sure to set the RAMs voltage to 2.1V before overclocking it. If 4-4-4-12 doesn't work try 4-4-4-15. If that still doesn't work try 5-5-5-15.

Technically the RAM should work fine at 800mhz @ 4-4-4-12 so long as its getting it's 2.1V.

As for the CPU I would wait until you have you RAM running nicely at 800mhz before changing anything. Once you have the RAM running correctly try changing your FSB to 350 and your RAM to a 1:1 ratio. If that works then slowly work your way up to 400FSB. You might be lucky and actually reach 3.6Ghz for your CPU.

Thanks guys for the help so far :P

when i get home im going to try the following.
1. change my ram voltage to 2.1v and save to see if my pc boots :P
2. change my fsb from auto to 400 (i think this is right)
3. change my cpu multiplier to 6 (6x400=2400 - stock speed of my processor??)
4. Reboot after steps 2 and 3 to test
5. Change Ram latency's to 4-4-4-12 (like it says on the tin :P)
6. Come and ask more questions on here!! :D

is this right. or are my concepts totally off?!

Cheers,
Russ.

edit: changed steps!

Just an update here!!!

i have my ram running at 800mhz now :D 2:3 ratio if i remember correctly.

and my processor is at 2.61 ghz.

id love for my processor to go further but when i try anything around the 300 x 9 mark when my machine reboots it does not get to the bios screen and it just crashes out saying it cant read from a floppy drive (i have none in the machine and have disabled all options to do with them)

I'm confused to say the least

Any help would be awesome!

Thanks,
Russ.

When you are trying to OC the CPU, you should underclock the meory to make sure it's not a factor. Then when you get a good OC you can set the mem to what you want. What vcore have you got set in the bios at the moment? Also, have you got the latest bios for that motherboard. I remember reading an review on that mobo at Anandtech and they said the early bios had problems.

thanks for the replies guys!!

just another problem now though lol! when im gaming my pc cuts out and blue screens with a memory error when under quite a heavy load.

i was wondering whether or not anyone had any idea's?

Thanks,
Russ.

edit: spelling was awful, sorry

You need to understand that when you up your FSB your RAM will be running too high if you keep it on the 2:3 multiplier. Keep it on a 1:1 multiplier until you get your CPU speed sorted out.

You should up your CPU voltage to 1.45V then try setting it to 300x9 with a RAM multiplier of 1:1. That should boot up no problem as long as you have all those cpu options disabled, can't remember their exact names, virtualization tech and boot failure guard and the other ones, basically they just limit your overclock.

If it runs at 300x9 with mem @ 1:1 then start putting your FSB up. You will probably have to up your NB voltage by 0.1V or so. Try getting it to 350x9 with mem @ 1:1 and then come back here.
