"Professonal People"

No. It's faith healing.

TBH OP, just put your profession down as part time christian science practitioner.

If anyone questions it invite them round for a session. Then when it doesn't work you can ask them to start a thread in speaker corner. They'll soon give up.

:D
What do I do if they get better? As Terry Pratchett remarked: some people will get better from anything.

I successfully applied for Citizenship last November and got my approval letter a couple of weeks ago. Just the ceremony left in a few weeks then will officially be British and my passport should be delivered soon after.

They are very strict on the requirements, including referees. If the requirements are not met they will refuse the application and that will be £1.3k down the drain.

I used a friend who is a director of a limited company as my 'professional' referee. Surely she must know someone that has their own limited company... I could have picked a number of people. Otherwise the list of accepted professions is pretty clear.

It's an archaic criterion that badly needs updating to reflect changes in the last few centuries.

When I needed a "professional" to vouch for me, my manager qualified because they had a personal alcohol licence. That was a long time ago, though. If it's still a valid "qualification" for being a "professional" in this context, then anyone running any premises in the UK that's licensed to sell alcohol for consumption on the premises would qualify. It has to be the person running the premises - employees are authorised to sell alcohol by the licence holder and don't need a licence themselves.

The whole countersign thing is a load of rubbish, for passports at least. What purpose does it actually serve? For a first adult passport you have to attend and interview anyway so they can see if you are who you say you are.

Not if you have an identical twin they can't :D

Anyone who is in a job which requires an CRB or DBS check would quality. Even if its an cleaner.

I can see where you’re coming from with that suggestion, and on the face of it, it should be right.
If you’ve successfully passed one of those checks, you SHOULD be considered as an okay, respectable person, but I honestly can’t see someone being issued with a passport, because I signed the back of their photo, with Jean-François Blank, ex Black Cab driver, successful CRB/DBS applicant.

Agreed, i work in the software dev industry like the OP, yet whenever i fill out insurance forms, i list myself as a professional as that's the closest category to the industry i work in - i.e. it's not classed as Skilled/Administrative etc.

Well Cab driver doesn't seem to be on the list, driving instructor is on there though
