Picked one of these up at the start of the week so sorry if the question is a bit daft!

As I understand, when in this (P) mode, the dial on the back is supposed to shift between different combinations of f/stops and shutter speeds but maintain the same exposure. If I want to increase shutter speed I can just dial a few clicks to the right. When I do this on my D40, my P changes to a P* as expected but I see no change to the display of f/stop and shutter in the display or the lcd. Nothing changes in the EXIF either, is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

Yeah its a bit weird but if you change the metering mode to Centre weighted then turning the dial changes the shutter speed and aperture. No idea why it doesnt do it in matrix or spot metering tho.

ah, I know i'm in matrix mode so that will be it. Will give it a go when I get home, might as well switch to shutter priority instead though!

Thanks for the reply

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat with the D60, and the P-mode doesn't seem useful for anything...I tend to just use shutter or aperture priority modes (typically with matrix light-metering) and adjust the exposure bias to suit.

I've also got a D40, and although I haven't tried it much, I seem to remember fiddling in P mode and finding it didn't do anything. There might be some trick to it, but in my opinion your better of trying shutter or aperture mode and experimenting with exposure.

Do you know what, I have now just tried it with centre weighted and it doesnt do anything! I swear it changed earlier today, very odd.
I tend not to use P mode very often anyway, just A mode or S mode. Im still learning to use the best combinations, best advice is to keep practising and shooting! :)

After taking it oustide I have found it also works fine. I was just at the limits of the lense in low light previously!
