IS there a program that will either Create a log or show on top of games, that shows how much physical memory I am using ?

I am trying MSI Afterburner, but I cant get it to show on top (I've tried assigning a hot key)

Have you placed a tick in the properties of what you are trying to observe in the OSD settings in Afterburner? You have to click on the item you want to show and enable it by checking a box further down the screen which says "show in OSD". You have to do that for each item. It took me a while to figure out how to get it to show what I want but have had no problems with it since. I have mine set to show GPU temp, GPU core clockspeed, GPU memory clockspeed, ,GPU usage, GPU memory use, FPS, CPU load per core and overall, cpu temp, system memory usage and pagefile usage.

I've just left it at default, everything seems already ticked to me
so on the "on screen display" tab, I've put a hot key on the "show on screen display"
no idea how to use the program so I could be doing something wrong
 
Windows task manager will show peak usage. As will seeing the process memory usage, ie doom now is using 3.4GB

When you installed afterburner you did install the rivatuner statistics server (you can uncheck it as part of the install) as well? You need this for the OSD to work.
