Project 'Add Power'!

ive looked at this idea, the mx5 that is, as its rwd, however thinking about putting a klze from the usa mx6 which is 190hp v6 and converting it to fit to rwd.....

if you need hosting for your videos let me know!

A guy I know is having his supercharged mx-5 dyno'd tomorrow. I'm interesting to see what his makes compared to your projected 200 :)

Would love your mx5 when done! Love the looks and with the supercharger it will be awesome! Any brake upgrades planned at all?

Have you thought about stiffening the chassis too? I hear the butterfly brace by FM is meant to be good.

Cheers Dan, its going to 4 pot Brembos soon as i can find someone to machine me some carrier brackets.

The current 1.8 calipers are going on the back along with the front vented disks.

In terms of chassi bracing, i'm waiting to get some coilovers on first then full geo, once this is done then i will add the front and rear lower & upper braces then look at closing off the transmission tunnel with as you say an FM brace.

So loads of cash to be spent yet!!!!!!!!

Other than that its prolly getting the mk2.5 front sports bumper with the projector headlights.

But i need to finish off some current jobs like a doorcard retrim and wiring up of my heated seats!

At some point, but that will be a few months off at least, i need to know its not going to throw a belt or do something silly first.

I was thinking south of france drop into Monaco + do some topgear roads :D

Awesome mate, glad you've finally gone through with it. :p

Just seen the vid from this guys SC setup and that noise is addictive. :D

Make sure you get some vids up when done, making great progress as well. Seems the install isn't too difficult, just fiddily in parts although I know you've done a few things before under the bonnet so you must know your way around pretty well by now. ;)

haha, that sounds awesome :D That'd get a big grin from me!

Reminds me of the old A series Minis. They used to make that kind of whine, think it was down to the gearbox. Sounded ace though.

Wow, excellent stuff Firestar - I will be keeping a close eye on this thread. I wish I had some sort of motor mechanical knowledge or confidence to try something like this myself.

Yeah I feel this way with my 1.8iS too. Its a great car and I really love driving it, but it could really do with that extra go. I have thought about either a Turbo or Supercharger, but I would have to pay someone to do the whole job, which I guess is going to be £2500+?

What are your plans for the old induction kit? I have a Typhoon fitted to mine, but spotted your cold air box, have you any plans for it or would you be up for selling it?

Well the following got done today :

Collected new SC belt

TPS loom has been extended

Final fixings of the throttle cable and adjustment for tension

Final install of the crossover tube

Made a blanking plate for the mazda TB

Replacement of TB gaskets (Both sides)

Instant gasket use :p

However i came across several problems, actually spent more time in the clio driving around today looking for parts than working on the mazda.

Issues of the Day :

I've spent loads of time this morning phoning around trying to get a MK2 dummy throttle body or ICV (Idle control valve), no luck from the shops.

Need some 45 degree silicon bends for the intake, looked all over the place, couldn't find anything, even went to the scrappers but it was shut!

The ICV is wrong for the TB i have so in the end i've got a mate sending me one down from Scotland, had another friend over this morning and he is going to bring me an ICV off his second engine, but i don't know if it will fit, should have this tonight for testing out tomoz!

So this leaves me in the following position :

The car fired up several times today, but without some revs the thing just stalls, as above due to the ICV, so without this i can't run the car to map it, once i get the ICV / 45 degree silicon hoses and extend the MAF wire thats job done basically.

A few side items still need finishing like connecting the washer bottle up again etc.

Missing intake bends, you can see i need one to bridge the gap from MAF to pipe and the other needs to go at the back of the throttle body :

How close are these belts (Running through the new tensioner!)

Overall engine shot, what it looks like after today :

I will get some vids for you, but they may take some time i may be out enjoying myself

Cold airbox was home made, got a sheet of metal from B&Q and cut it up to fit, it did make some diff but rattled around so took it back out!

Yea the typhoon is gonna be sold, no nee for it anymore!

Ace.

Is there much merit in cooling the intake? Thats one thing that struck me about the MX5 application that you can cool it unlike the honda kits where the charger is right on the intake.

You can get cold and hotside chargers, clearly one is over the manifold and the other straight over the intake.

Problem with adding a intercooler or chargecooler is you increase the volume of the throttle intake this can cause lag on the throttle since the supercharger has a bigger volume to fill, it will give you slightly more power but it can cost you.

I will prolly fit a chargecooler to mine at some point, i need to look at the intake temps first :)

I can't wait to try will's car out, i didn't get chance to go in it last time
I took it out for another razz lastnight - it's hugely addictive :D
Will was grinning in the passenger seat and so was I, so it must be doing something right :D
