Project Android

Hehe, already done that. That was what the server used to be housed in. The cd drive was even on rails, made out of little wheels, lol. All in the name of engineering of course.

Your project raises some interesting questions about perceptions of the female body within the computing world. A female shell with a mind, or cps, that is programmed by a man. Is this a stunning body or a stunted body? This female body appears to operate as an eroticized object of the male gaze. However the figure is fundamentally castrated. Is it an attempt to create the perfect companion? - A woman entirely at you disposal, physically and mentally? Is this project essentially scopophilic?

Your a Psychology or Philosophy student arn't you? :p Interesting post you made there. However I believe the purpose and concept behind this project is quite the opposite of what you have suggested. Although it based around the the female form, I want to get away from any sexual connotations as much as possible. Androids and Cyborgs have always facinated me, especially androids. As we are rapidly heading towards being able to create credible machines that replicate human behaviour and look, as well advancements in artifical neural networks, it begs the question of when do they become 'alive' in their own right, or do they ever? Will a machine ever be able to become intelligent enough to express self awareness, and if so has mankind spawned a new lifeform?

Going back to the question of wether the project is scopophilic, I would say no. However I do consider the the female form to be more gracefull from an artistic point of view, and as this is not only a engineering project, but also a sculptural project I felt that a female android was more appropriate.

Edit; And welcome to the forums btw. :) (Claimed!)

Wow, ive just realised this thread has had over 10,000 views now, thanks guys. :) I picked up some car body filler today, and ordered some more cables that I need. Im planning on coating the inside with a layer of body filler to make it all smooth inside, ready for painting as at the moment its quite fiberous from the fiberglass. Im still desperately trying to rack down some suitable ball and socket joints or univeral joints for the neck area.

Thank you Yewen, im honoured. I would like to thank my manager, my parents, the woman who sold me.. ehem! Sorry don't know what came over me there. Anyway, back to work. :)

Cheers guys. :) Im working on it at te moment, ive literally just popped up in to my room to get some glue and epoxy putty. Ive just finished making the PSU bracket which was something I have been putting off. ANyway, i'll post some pictures later if I can find some batteries for my camera.

Ive done some more work on it today, having a week off from work and all. :) I really should write a list of things that need doing and in what order as I keep starting on new jobs without finishing other ones. But as long as it gets finished in the end I suppose its ok. Anyway the first job that needed doing today, was to finish off the PSU bracket. Although the PSU had a really tight fit in the bracket I had already made, I wanted to make sure that it wouldn't fall out if the thing was turned upside down for some reason. In the following picture you can see at the top left of the PSU, I have added a peice of angle bracket. This is epoxy glued to the base plate and screwed into a hole in the PSU. This simply acts like an ancor to ensure that the PSU won't go anywhere.

The next job was to fill in some holes in the resin that had been caused by air bubbles during the casting. I simply circled the worst parts to make them easier to spot, then went round and smeared epoxy putty over them. It looks really rough and messy at the moment, but im going to let it set properly over night then sand it right down. This will help the outside looking as flawless as possible once the white gloss is sprayed on.

As well as the epoxy putty, I have now also bought epoxy car body filler. Im going to use this to coat the inside of the body where it is still quite fiberous from the fiber glass. Again this is to make the surface as good as possible for painting, but it will also add thickness to make it look better, as well as hopefully giving some more rigidity and strength to the whole thing.

Once i'd finished filling in the air bubbles, I decided to attatch a couple of the cables. Ive added the two jack cables for the sound. To make the socket as flush to the back as possible, I used a couple of washers to add a bit of height. I also added the usb cable. To get the required height on this, I used more epoxy putty. Once im finished, all of the cables will be moulded into the body to make it look more organic on the inside. The usb cable I used is actually a two port usb hub, as the plug was actually shorter than a standard usb extension cable which would have been in the way of the mobo tray. Ive now also ordered a few more extension cables i need, including a vga cable and 2 x ps2 cables.

Finally a overall shot of what ive left her in the garage looking like. :)

Woho, ive got stars! :D
@ Tony Soprano.. Yeah, i keep having to force myself to be patient and not do any painting yet. I want to get 100% of the construction work done before paiting, so that I don't damage the paint finish.

People at my local Boyes must think im downright weird now. Ive just gone in there to look for some ping pong balls or something of similar size for the eye balls. Im looking in the kids toy section when my mum who was with me comes out with "They're for making eye balls!" Cue funny looks from the staff stacking the shelves. :( On the flip side though, I found what I was looking for, so I can do work on the eyes now.

I hevent actually got the paint yet, but im fairly sure im going for matt black on the inside and gloss white on the outside, with most of the alu polished up.
@ RandomTom.. do you know how long that would take! Its taking me long enough for 1, never mind a family. And anyway, if I get the software working I should be able to program her to replicate herself to make an army. ;)

Here, have some updates of the work I did yesterday. The first job I did was to sand down where I had filled in the holes created by air bubbles. I still could probably do with going over again as I noticed a few tiny holes that I had missed, but hopefully a few layers of primer paint should remove the smallest holes.

I then drilled and filed some holes for more cables to fit in. The first one to be done was the VGA cable, which as you can see has been fitted in the back of the head. Im really pleased with the fit of this hole, shame the end of the vga connector is blue though.(The picture doesn't really do it justice, as its much more flush wit the back of the head than the picture shows)

The other cables to be added were 2 PS" cables in the spine. A bit of epoxy glue and they fit nicely. Im going to strenghten them today by covering them in epoxy putty. The only 2 remaining cables to be fitted now are Network cables. Does anyone know if its even possible to get male-female network cables?

Finally I played around with the ey parts to see what they will look like. Im planning on painting the ping pong ball pure white and coating it in varnish to make it look better. Ive also had the idea of buying pale blue contact lenses to make the iris. Anyone know where I can get really cheap contact lenses?

I really need a better camera don't I. Anyway, thats what I did yesterday.

Looking great!! Can't wait until the finished thing!!!

Just out of interest, how much is this thing costing? Must be quite a lot!

Im not counting, as it would be too depressing. Lets just say 'a lot', lol. But as mentioned before, a lot of the cost is on tools which I see more as an investment.

"The Gadget Shop", although I think it has a new name now sells all different kind of contact lenses, colors , patterns etc. I'd check there site!

Cheers. :)

Well I want the eye to look as realitic as possible, so im wanting the whole iris effect etc. The origional plan was to print out the iris pattern on to paper and glue it to the the ball, but with a quick test that didn't look very good at all. The focus being changed from contact lenses doesn't really matter at all, as I can refocus the camera to compensate anyway, but it its going to become really brittle then thats more of a problem. Another otion I want to test, is to try and get hold of some transparrents 'film' and print the iris onto that.

I have been toying with the idea of entering it custom pc or similar, would be great if I could win something for it. :D

So what have I been doing today? Well, I took one perfectly decent motherboard tray and drew some lines on it;

12mobotray1er0.jpg

Then put it in photoshop and coloured bits in

12mobotray2gb9.jpg

Then spend 7 hours attacking it with a selection of power tools, files and sandpaper!

12mobotray3zz9.jpg

And hey presto, I have a motherboard tray. Hang on a second.. I started with a motherboard tray! But this one looks better(Not that your going to be able to see it behind the motherboard, nevermind) and it gives a bigger clearance for the cables in the spine. I still don't think there is quite enough clearance for the PS2 cables, so I might have to raise the mobo tray as high as possible. Depending on how heigh I have to move it up, I might end up needing to use PCI riser cards for the newtwork cards.

Not sure yet tbh. Suggestions welcome. One idea that ive had is to call her 'Project 2501', ie the self aware AI known as the puppet master in Ghost in the Shell.
