Project car boot

Decided I would put HDD rack in after all and if it doesn't look righ I can always take it out.

This is a test fit so screws are not fixed which explains why it appears to be sagging a bit at the back.

Fan and pwer cables will be routed behind it so as not to obstruct airflow or be seen.

As I'm now thinkig of actually using this PC I'm giving thought to cooling the CPU a bit better. when I ran it as a rest bench (see start of thread) I thought it was running a bit hot, but then I'm not used to the model of CPU so may be normal. I think it was running at about 45 degrees at idle.

Thoughts welcome

I've now finished the piece I fabricated that will serve to hide some of the spagetti from the old non modular PSU i'm using.

the magnetic tape I used wasn't cheap though,

Cost me a whopping 99p from the local craft shop. (which really oddly had no end of stuff that interrested me as a modder.

So this is the plate, small notch cut in to accomodate framework and pained matt black as per inside of case.

The magnetic tape with it's field strength now at about 0.5 Tesla (it's pushing itself apart)

A couple of strips of it holding the plate in place. It's actually adhesive on one side but at 0.5T this isn't actually needed.

In the next few days hope to mod a white CCFL to give a true orange light and sort out the mess on the front.

Shaping up quite nicely now.

I like what you've done with the front fans, and the HDD rack is a good addition imo.

I think orange sata cables would look superb in this! :D

Hadn't actually though of that, I was going to braid them black. I think I actually have some orange ones somewhere if I haven't used them in someone elses build along the way.

I'll dig them out and post a piccy see what you think.

Managed to find the old sata cables in the back of a cupboard

Also found an old tuniq tower 120 I forgot I had. If I remember rightly it lights up blue which is not an effect i'm after as i'm going for orange lighting inside (maybe some uv also)

I guess i could probably disable the lighting on it but it seems a shame.

Sata cables correct colour of orange ?????

White ccfls which I intend to convert to orange and of course braid up nicely.

looked at doing an led mod for previous build but chickened out as i couldn't sus all the voltaages and resistance side of things

if any one knows exactly what leds and bits i might need do please let me know

You could always wire 4 or 5 Leds in series on a 12v line from molex connector. This way each one would see 2.5-3.0v each which is fine.

Alternatively you can often buy multiple LEDs from the well known online auction site that come with free resistors to step down from 12v. As an example I have some 5mm blue LEDs which I think are standard brightness and have 470 ohm resistors supplied. Check this too http://ledcalc.com/#

I've bought a few sets from there for silly, back of the sofa prices.

Edit: Just checked my spare LED fan and they are actually wired in Parallel with resistors.

I really wish at least a bit of that meant something to me. Any chance of a sort of "buy this" and" wire it in like this" with pictures sort of thing.

Trust enabled.

Thinking of doing both, and it's a skill I would love to have.

I can solder, and have all the other stuff, even have some leds about the place. It's just the whole worry of making things go bang (like my mobo) that concerns me.

I have 2 lots of leds, of 2 sizes but no idea of their electrical rating or how the whole thing works. I remember V=IR but that's about it.

Up for a tutorial???

Wiring pictures and instructions are great mate just what I needed to give me the nerve to have a go. You have some real skills there.

Being doing a bit of braiding meantime.

bit of a mess

Extended the length of one of them and braided both with wire and braid left over from other jobs.

these cable stripping and crimping pliers are one of the best investments I ever made. They make it so easy.

I use this tape to cover over the bare ends of the wires making it easier to pass the braiding over without snagging. It's 3M Micropore. If you work for the NHS you've probably got some in the house somewhere. If not I think you can get it from Boots.

The pin removal tool didn't do a very good job (not a good investment) In the end I used the point of some scissors to get the fan pins out of the connector

Looking a bit better.

Also going to try to wire up the front switch panel I made from an old DVD drive

You just had to mention the front of the case didn't you....

You just wouldn't let it lie.....

yeah when i'm feeling inexplicably happy, you know, a general sense of joy for no particular reason, I just go and have a look at the front of the case and it soon goes away.

Actually waiting for some foam board trim to arrive which i'll use to cover it over. Maybe also use some as a black border for the fan holes.

I'd like to have a go at re braiding the 24pin mobo plug but for the life of me can't seem to get the pins out.

Any advice

are the locating barbed pins either side or top and bottom of each individual pin?

I've been faffing around and generally trying to get them out by swearing at them a lot but it isn't working.

Cheers got a tool similar to the one above and have just had a go with it.

It took a bit working out just how much force to use but I seem to have cracked it.

It's this sort of help and support that I think makes this forum a great place.

^^ Useful for when I get into braiding & lighting too :), I sleeved part of my flat ide cable the other day lol, was a bleep to get on, but got there eventually lol :D.

Love to see a picture of that Waynio

Must've been like trying to get a squid into a string bag.

Cheer marvin

Never had much bother with other cables and if you've seen the skelton mods you'll know i've done a few!!! (actually a bit of a braiding addict)

Just this PSU was proving a bit troublesome. I guess its all in the technique which I guess like most things in life comes with practice.

So tell me your staple/pliers technique. It sounds a bit easier

what's an IDE cable??

serously, I think they look very nicely done. I've followed that build and never even realised they were IDE

Decided I would dig out my old Tuniq tower120 and give it a bit of a modding to use it in the build.

Plan is to change out the fan for one with amber LEDs
give it a good clean
braid wiring
? re spray top orange (what do you think to this idea)???

Opened another thread as I'd like advice on what people think is a good 120mm fan with amber LEDs. I've seen a few but on closer inspection they appear to be amber plastic with white LEDs. I could re do the LEDs in the Tuniq but they are really well heatgun glued in.

Anyways got the tuniq apart, took about 3 mins!!!!

This is the top part i'm thinking of spraying orange

currently trying to re braid the psu and having a real sense of humour failure as the pins just do not want to shift.

Given up on the PSU for now and decided to crack on with the tuniq mod

Sanded for painting

As it's so hot I was able to get primer and top coat on in 1 hour

In the end the LEDs came out easy. just left the fan in the sun for a while and the glue became soft enough to just pop them out with a craft knife blade.

Think these are 5mm ones so will be ordering up (thanks for link tealc). I may need a bit more advice re soldering as i'm a bit rusty and don't want to melt the LEDs

The wires to the fan aren't colour coded so have peeled back a bit of the sticker. three terminals S, + and -. anyone tell me which colours these are on a conventional 4 pin fan plug???

with regards to the LEDS the white wire appears to be coming off the -ve terminal and going to the larger of the 2 elements in the LED itself. so is this the anode or cathode? and will it be the long leg or the short leg????

Tealc I sure hope this makes sense to you.

Might have gotten you mixed up with someone else then re the AMD stuff, but kudos to you none the less

Mod of the tuniq is going quite well. Whole thing needs a clean up and LEDs soldering in to the fan but the spray job has gone ok I think.

Also wrapped the white ccfls in plastic wrap from craft shop (I used red as for some odd reason it was more orange than the orange wrap. Photos don't really do it justice as it's giving off a deep orange light.
