Project E39 Revival

Completely off topic - but how the hell did you ascertain the car from that small pic Fox?

Owning one helps I suppose, I recognised it too.

I suppose both of us have regularly washed / polished identical sills.

Glad the car is being fixed, still wondering how the OP manged that though....

Unlucky bud. Also unfortunate as I just gave away my old 18" M5 replica alloys last month could have gave you them untill you got some decent 18s they had tyres as well.

I think I still have 4 of the same alloys in your picture in the shed if you need them no guarantees tho :D

If only i was a month earlier haha, thanks for the thought though Dave. I have 9 of the alloy wheel type that is currently on my car as i had to buy a donor e39 to replace the wings/bonnet and repair some other bits and bobs lol

Most of the dents can be taken out with a slide hammer (small pins get spot welded into the middle of the dent and removed after). As long as someone reasonably skilled it working on it it will need no more than a small skim of filler to make it look perfect.

I did a similar thing myself when I first got mine. Didn't manage to leap any barriers though and luckily it was still worth enough to get a full repair at BMW.

Best lesson ever though isn't it :p

Do these have an LSD then? I have a 328 with an open diff and can't even get he back end out on an icy car park* - it stepped out a tiny bit at a roundabout once but as soon as the wheel spun up it pulled itself back into line. Surely the 5 series isn't any more wild?

*And I was abusing it, too.

Show it a bit of shift lock and it'll go.

It's never going to be spectacular with an open diff, though. If you want to go sideways, get it welded or find a decent sport diff (not an easy task these days).

You're being far too gentle by the sounds of it, I assume you've turned off using the magic button? I could get the back out on my 328 in the wet with absolutely no trouble, big big bootful needed to tempt it then it's just a matter of trying to hold it (practice being quick and smooth/confident with your inputs) - quite difficult to do what the Op has done I found but to be fair correcting in the wrong way can lead to all sorts of trouble and lumps n bumps in the road along the way certainly wouldn't help.

I do have to question why it's getting fixed though, I know the money is spent now but £3k would get you a very nice e39 plus you'd have gotten reasonable money back for the straight bits then scrapping the existing motor.

I think he is fixing it as his family has owned it since brand new.

I would fix mine if I did similar damage and incurred similar cost, too. It's not rational but then few hobbies are.

Behold.... *gulp*

So how much damage did they do with the chains?

No LSD.

You can't get the back out on an icy carpark? Err... I thought you bought it specifically for drifting :p

That'd be his red one, and yes it's been drifted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-BrBrqDk_4

Other one is an ASC model so no slippy diff. I took the donut challenge and failed also, even with a bunch of clutch kicks I couldn't make it go round, just understeer. Same deal as the e46 really, with DSC on it's pretty uncrashable, even with it fully off it isn't tail happy in the slightest.

Sprayer has now told me that the dent will need to be pulled out and recommended a few companies.. This was my worst nightmare and I am dreading the cost. I think they use something called a Miracle Pull?

I am now in a situation where I have spent roughly £1.5k.. Need to spend another £1k on the spray and now an additional sum of money to get the dent pulled out, as it's structural to the car.

I can't buy a new E39 as I wouldn't be able to get insured, the only reason I can at the moment is that we have owned it from new. The only way I would be able to drive another E39 is if I repaired the one we have at the moment.

Debating whether or not to cut my losses and get a banger.. raging!

Anyone want to buy some E39/M-Technik bits displayed above? I have 2 E39's now :/

If you've spent £1.5k already, £1k is going to be better than cutting your losses.

Having that dent pulled out shouldn't cost much at all!

Ah, no, sorry - that one has an LSD and skids like a mofo.

I traded the focus in for another 328 as the focus was annoying me and I found a 328 I liked, drove it and fell in love with it. Such a nice car, I wish I'd bought one sooner. It has an open diff and I managed to break the traction control by simply turning it off to see what happens only to find I am unable to turn it on again :/

No biggie, the car is woefully slow compared to the other car and much less leary.

The dent shouldn't cost much to pull out - and that's all you want surely? Your painter can handle filling and painting, presumably?

I am in the same situation with the Focus after the OH hit a "stick" (looks more like a bloody tree hit it!) It has completely caved the sill in. I'm going to stick a couple of self tappers in there and give it a crack first, if not it's a case of chucking £20 to a mate in a body shop to pull it out one evening.

No, trust me, I was abusing the **** out of it (as was clarkey) and it was just boring understeer. TBH the car is utterly boring to drive - thankfully it's a lush place to be, very nice indeed.

Keep looking for LSDs on ebay - but other people seem to always want them just a little more than I do :(
