Project E39 Revival

Thanks for another informative post, Fox :). Ah so any 540 has the M-Tech suspension - didn't know that. Hmmm I'm sure I've seen 540s without sports seats, but maybe that's only when they have the comfort seats option fitted - better pay more attention. There's a nice looking i for sale with heated comfort seats and OMG - active massaging option too. Too bad a) it's grey inside and out, b) i'm not buying one yet.

Thanks again.

Correct - you would need to buy the seperate body mouldings for the sides unfortunately :(

EDIT: Out-beaten and blown out of the water by Fox.. lol :D

Quoted for pure awesome. Side profile is just stunning :)

A manual 530i Sport is number one on my want list when I return home... lots of white 540i's out here tanking down the motorway, they look epic but I cant keep up with them in my Nissan Sunny.

For anyone still interested in this thread.. A few more picture updates!

Few more pictures from today - aligned the front end panels and primered the car. I managed to do a deal on some pretty expensive lacquer (usually £400!) today, so this should look good once it's done :)

I quite like the matte effect (only primer):

More to come :) hoping to have it sprayed next week!

Cheers guys, it was my masking.. As you can see, I don't do bodywork so you can't blame me lol.. It's only primer, I won't be masking for the actual topcoat (thank god - it is harder than it looks. There's a reason why I work in an office :D ).

And spraying next to an unmasked window - where?

Not that I'm any kind of painting expert but I dont understand the masking either. Not just the fact you'll have overspray to get off your rear window, but haven't you masked off bits you want painting, like bits of the bootlit? I know you're just priming, but...

Ah well good luck and I can't wait to see the final result.

Thanks :) I asked this question, and my friend told me the answer but I can't remember what he said lol. Something about getting a better finish by doing it a certain way.

Are you going for that crazy-paving look ;)

Lol definitely not! I am just putting all my trust in my friend who is spraying the car. I am sure there are reasons, and everything (apart from my bad masking) will look good in the end :D

As you can tell.. I have absolutely no knowledge when it comes to spraying cars :(

It all needs block sanding down, so I guess he'll primer things once that's all done?

I made the mistake of spraying with a rattle can with an uncovered car in the garage. Even after claying the windows a number of times, you can still see the overspray on the glass in direct sunlight. Overspray from a rattle can is about a million times less than a proper gun too. Look at how cloudy the air in the booth is.

Yeah I can imagine. Will all be covered up and masked properly for the final paint job :) i.e not by me lol

Apparently.. (from another forum)

"Theres really no reason to prime a panel if there is zero bodywork on it, really, there's not, unless the panel is starting to lift old paint or has large scratches that need filling. Minimal amount of material needed to make coverage on a panel is best. Only primer the whole car if its totally needed. As long as you prep the car the way it should be the paint should look great. If there's tonnes of bodywork then of course prime the whole car, if all the panels are good except the bumpers than i would not prime the entire thing. Of course I would always recommend a sealer on the car before laying any basecoat down."

and..

"You dont have to primer it if your painting it the same color. Unless you sand down to the metal then you need a metal etch can i believe its called, so when you primer your sanded spots, the primer will stick instead of flaking off. But if there is no metal spots, then you can jus wet sand it and paint it. Imo autobody shops are trying to make their money."
