Project:- F M J

Today I've been filing down the edges of the areas where I've been cutting and also filling the holes at the bottom of the case to give a cleaner look.

Not much to show for a days work, but you've got to go through this patch to get to the enjoyable stuff.

Used wood filler rather than metal (as it was all I had. I've used wood filler before on cases and it's absolutely fine. I'm actually convinced from the smell that it's the same stuff anyway.

The Big hole is where the lock goes.

Case and internals all keyed and waiting to be washed prior to their primer coat.

Dubs, just out of interest, what do you use as preparation for spraying it down?

Pretty sure you use the Halfords paint? But what is your full process? Sanding/Priming/Spraying/Finishing?

Just a bit interested really, well you might see why I'm interested soon :) But looks like this is coming along nicely :)

Now worries happy to share what I do, but i'm no expert mind.

If painting plastic then I follow the process below

Rub over with 600grit just to give a key.
wash down the parts with water and washing up liquid to remove all grease. Rinse very well and allow to air dry turning occasionally while wearing rubber gloves.
just before painting I go over with a tack cloth.
If Aluminium I then use an Etch primer and allow to dry. If steel or Plastic I just go straight to Primer undercoat.
paint with Halfords grey or white Primer/undercoat.
A few coats of this then a a rub down with 1200 grit to remove any imperfections.
Wash down again and rinse well and allow to dry.
Top coat with many light coats. Don't get carried away.
Paint surfaces horizontal wherever possible.

You have 2 main enemies.

Dust and stuff floating in the air.
Grease. Mainly from your fingers.

Hope it helps, any questions just ask away.

I've now taken the case totally apart. I say totally apart, but in fact 8 screws will see it essentially flat packed.
All parts have been sanded and washed down in detergent and given a good rinse prior to painting, and left in what's passing for sun on the bank holiday Monday afternoon to dry.
They'll all get a going over with the tack cloth prior to painting. I'll be using Halfords grey primer undercoat first then copper on the inside and Tamya olive drab on the outside.
Might also try my hand at a bit of a logo on the front door.

You could fit 2 pcs in Dubs' other current log!

Just out of interest, how do you sand down? By hand? or a mechanical alternative (e.g. sanding disc on a dremel)

P.s. Just out of curiosity, how many pcs do you actually have these days?!

all prep is by hand. its the only way to feel for the finish.

PC wise I have the following
WC skelly i7 920 etc
WC CM690 as above.
carboot has an old amd system in it and isnt used
an icute with an old amd which isnt used

case wise the story is a bit diferrent
cobra skelly
assorted beige boxes some with internals but untested. carboot jobs for a few £
FMJ which is work in progress
MODZART which is work in progress

there might be a few other odds and sods around but i think thats it.

I've spent most of the day final prepping and getting the undercoat on.
using my usual favourite Halfords Grey Primer/undercoat.

I'm also going to be using the fans that came with the case. The smaller set will be used to move air over the HDD area.

And being as the switches and activity/power light mounts will be visible within the case we can't really have them looking all beige can we.

Think I might have enough G Clamps now

And finally rain stops play. I actually managed to get the first coat of top coat on the inside of the door but unfortunately rain drips splashed onto it so it will all have to be re done when it's dried out.
