True. Besides the toxicity (to fish) and/or lack of oxygen, I suspect you might also slowly poach them in a prolonged gaming session!
Reminds me of my son in early pre/infant school when he brought home a cardboard contraption with coloured-in fish dangling from 'invisible' line.
"I made a fish oven"
"Oh, you mean an aquarium"
"No. ...it's a FISH OVEN!"
And history did record that these were the first signs!

I did have a look to see if there were any robotic ones but the results of a quick search looked....naff. Maybe just some stickers on the outside - model ones inside might find their way into pumps and cause trouble!
