Project : Monolith

Small update .

Midplate/floor cut from dark red tint 3mm acrylic, then covered in black vinyl film.

img0081q.jpg

Covered with masking tape and then the pattern is drawn on. The pattern is the same design as the window cut on the side panel.

Missus had a bit of an accident, nothing serious, so i can't do anything too noisy at the moment hence the brief posts.

Should be back to normal next week,

Cheers,

Mark

Update time :)

As i've been on nursemaid duties looking after the missus, i've been confined to desktop mods - braiding and soldering etc..

Wasn't a great fan of the floppy bezel cover on the front of the case ( does anyone still use them ? )

The easy option would have been a fan controller or card reader to plug the space, but i wanted something subtle that kept the front smooth.

All the way from China, via an auction site, a simple USB HD44780 display

img0121k.jpg

As with 99% of these, they are a blue display :(

Managed to find a Red on Black screen , so just needed to solder the screen to the USB circuit board

img0122vk.jpg

Then out with the hacksaw, ansd some dark tint acrylic to make the fascia

img0120za.jpg

And voila ;

The colour i wanted for the water loop was a deep red, or blood red.

So i contacted someone who clearly ( i'm sure there's a joke there ! ) knows his stuff when it comes to dyes - Mayhem Dyes.

Mick / mayhem was a great help and very kindly agreed to sponsor me what was needed.

I've spoilt the surprise now, but guess what's in the box ?

Still wandering ?

A rainbow of liquid goodness

Enough dyes for this build, and plenty more to experiment with, top stuff :)

Lets meet the team

Should have some fun mixing them at the weekend, and fitting the water cooling.

Back soon ( barring accidents ;) )

Cheers guys, thanks for the comments :)

Time for a bit of an update :)

Made a small acrylic ' lens' for the Asus mobo logo ( which used to illuminate in a whitish blue colour when powered up ), keeps it in keeping with the colour scheme.

Now then fun part, fitting the watercooling ( again ! )

After playing with the dyes kindly sponsored by Mayhem Dyes, i was very pleased to come up with exactly the colour i wanted :)

I hope the pictures do the shade of red justice.

(ignore the white tube, thats me filling the reservoir)

Northbridge to CPU is always a tight bend, so this short length eliminates the problem.

Cheers mate, your build is looking good also.

Love the colour schemes in all your build mods, this one doesn't disappoint
cant wait for more pictures :D

Thanks for that, much appreciated :)

Love the towel, although the colour doesn't quite work :)
Seriously, great build and gorgeous colour scheme. Love the colour of the braiding too.

Cheers, yeh the towel wasn't doing much for the temperatures so i removed it !
Thanks for the positve comment :)

Brilliant build there.
You get those braids from Chilled PC am guessing ;)

Yes, from a 'competitor' !

Quality built. Well done m8.

Thanks :)

Leak testing has been done, and safe ( ! ) to put my 5850s' back in the case.

I photoshopped a small design to cover the fugly crossfire bridge. It'll do until i think of a better way to mask it.

Had a couple of people ask about the illuminated floor via email ( which is always welcome :) )

So here's a basic guide to making one.

Step 1

12mm right angle cross section.

cimg1999n.jpg

You can get lengths of the stuff from most DIY stores in aluminium or plastic. As this was not for strength, put simply to raise the floor, plastic was sufficient ( and far cheaper as i had to buy 2.8m of the stuff )

Simply cut to size with a Stanley knife, and in my case, spray the outside edge with black paint.

Step 2

Fix some of my favourite SMD led tape, available from Phenoptix, to the inside face.

cimg2002.jpg

Dead easy as it is self adhesive.

If you position the top of the tape 3mm from the top of the plastic cross section, then the 3mm acrylic floor will sit on it flush.

Step 3

After experimenting with different options, i found that a simple piece of white printer paper acts as a great diffuser for the light to even the spread out under the acrylic floor.

cimg2006.jpg

Step 4

Secure your cross section to the case, and the acrylic will rest on the SMD tape.

Step 5

Sit back and admire your work :D

Stunning Build Mate ;)

excellent build mark, very impressive

Thank you both, glad you approve :)

Hey, two things. 1. Is there any chanc of knowing where you get your braid from - it has looked really good on purple rain and this build? 2. Does the Lian Li PC-X1000 Full-Tower Case fit XL atx mobos?
thanks :)

The braid from Purple Rain was sponsored direct from america by Techflex.

The Monolith braid was supplied by a competitor ( but if you look back a page or 2 someone has mentioned them ;) )

Not sure on the mobo question, check the Lian-Li website ( i wouldn't want to give you duff information )

Cheers,

Mark
