Project Reality v1 finally here

That's true, Except1, but the sudden influx of new players and returnees after a very long absence will mean it'll take time for the overall standard to rise.

As players familiarise with the game, they'll get better, and as those that can't understand the concept leave, the game standard rises. Unfortunately though the numbers decrease and so do the servers.

The game has a year or two left until it's superseded by PR2, which is on the Crygen engine or something. Then there's PR for Arma3 which will be a year or so away I reckon.

Did you ask at the PR forums?

They really do know what they're talking about...they've been dismantling BF2 and putting it back together as Project Reality for the past 8 years. They know it inside out, basically.

Is it only a limited number of roles per server or some such thing?

Kind of.

Basically, each squad (max number of players in a squad is 8) is limited to one kit each of the specialist classes, except for medic, which two is allowed per squad. Standard rifleman kit is unlimited.

Prior to this release some specialist kits were limited to the whole team of 32, for example...sniper kit. If memory serves I think the whole team were only allowed two, so it was first come first served. I'm unsure of the sniper limit now the new release is with us and the player max has increased to 50 players per team.

Of course, if a squad mate has a certain kit and you find a fallen comrade with the same kit, yes you can pick it up and use it. But when your squad mate snuffs it and tries to spawn back in, he won't be able to select his kit again as the system sees that you've already got it.

Well that's me finished with it before I even started..

Been at this for hours and still no go, furthest I get it is to see the splash screen then back to desktop or the debug assertion window if I start in windowed mode...

Thanks

Did you receive any help from the PR forums? Bare with it, we'll get you up and running...I hope.

This is just one of those games that is so hopelessly boring without friends or people on the server communicating with you. :p

You're kind of right there.

For one, the game's requirement for voice comms pretty much should rule out people not communicating with you, but we all know that's not the case, especially after a sudden influx of noobs to the game.

The whole game can be boring if you allow it to be, for example....

If you're in a motor squad you may be asked to run ammo, so all you're doing is reloading the motor tubes or driving back to base for creates. However, a good squad leader should rotate duties so nobody gets bored.

The same squad leader may ask you to select a sniper kit and send you out spotting for enemy targets with the instructions of 'do not engage unless fired upon'. Even as the motor operator you're essentially just dialing in numbers into a screan, but you're also racking up the kills (if your received intel is good) which alleviates the boredom somewhat.
The above roles are very important but there's a chance of playing the whole round without firing your gun. But hey, this is Ronseal Woodstain and therefor all players should be aware it's not a shoot-em up fest from start to finish.

As I said earlier in the thread, to get the most out of this game you have to do your bit by playing the part. By that I mean you need to immerse yourself into it. The more players around you that do so, the more realistic it becomes.

I know nothing about the technical stuff. I was even scratching my head when you asked to seek out my profile.

But with my limited know how, you should be able to smash this game on highest settings with that system you've got.

I'm sure one of the geeks will be along to advise soon.

really kind and generous offer marker. Having thought about it over the weekend I've realised I just won't play. I get little enough time as it is to play the games I have already. It should go to a better home who can do your generosity justice. thanks again though.

The game could've done with more Lancastrians playing it, just give it a go and if you don't get hooked pass the log in details on for someone else to try.

I'm not keen on Kashan Desert really; I've had a few good rounds on it while playing tank squad, but I've had many more bad rounds on it while playing as infantry.

One bit of advice I'd give to server bosses and that's to try and choose maps which have factions that don't clash on the skin/uniform front. The lack of friendly player tags is proving this mod's biggest thorn.

No but it is the complete edition that is on sale hence why I linked it.

I know, I was just saying so some of the more inexperienced people don't make the same mistake I did when I first installed BF2 from the 'complete edition' disc.
Yup, I installed the whole lot hogging up a big part of my HD when I only needed the vBF2 files.

oops, dunno why I always end up typing my posts like that....have amended :p

but it's not the game that's amazing if you have to find a good squad - it's the social interaction that's making it seem/feel good. chuck any turd of a game together but add an element of I don't know what you want to call it ...lets say 'social working togethery-ness and it will have an appeal....doesn't make it a good game.

and I said in my last post I was bowing out...definitely am now :p

This game requires two things to make it enjoyable in my opinion.....a good squad, and the willingness to roll play.

Being a soldier irl isn't all combat as I'm sure you know; much is about logistics, engineering, labouring. This game requires its players to do just that to work how it's intended.

It also has an element of strategy gameplay for the commander and squad leaders...deciding where to put troops on the map in the early stages for example.

From my own experiences, I've never played a better game. I've played rolls like gathering intel on enemy positions and likely intended destinations of the enemy, then telling the guys on the mortars to lay shells on that area. Not a single shot fired, but a win for the team and all that. I've also played as a counter-sniper to stop the enemy sniper tallying up his kill count in crucial areas. I've played many times as the LMG guy laying suppressive fire down so the assault guys have an easier time. I've never done logistics as I'm not a good pilot, but some of those guys that do nothing else but fly, are fantastic to watch.

It really does seem to me that this game encompasses more of the stuff that is required in real conflicts, than any other game I know of. Sadly though, it requires most of the players to be prepared to role play to make it work. Graphics and engine aside, if you see it as a hybrid FPS, strategy game, requiring military fantasists to operate as the pawns, then you'll appreciate it a little more.

I played for the first time in a few months last night, and it was a complete cluster. From past experience after a major update/publicity spike, it takes a few days to shake off the chaff that's inevitably playing COD style.

Can't wait for a good session with a good squad leader, so if your offer is open to others, Benneh, let me know.

hmmmm........maybe.....just maybe it is winning me over ;)

Based on some more game time or just what is written here? I asked because I was going to post to you to tell you to wait a week or two, because finding a good squad is proving really difficult since the patch.

When the messers go back to playing whatever, I hope PR will be the organised grind it was intended to be.
