Project: Scorpidian (Corsair Obsidian 800D)

This is my 3rd build, but my 1st water-cooled build (wish me luck). As I am trying to take as much care with this build as I can afford, I thought I would share my efforts on this forum .

As for the name, I don't know why I chose it, but it's better than no name at all! I may even purchase a scorpian windows applique, don't know yet!

Please note that I won't finish purchasing my stuff until March~ as I am awaiting the ASUS Rampage 3, Intel i7 930, new range of SSDs, as well as other bits and bobs.

Corsair Obsidian 800D - the case is big, the box is.. bigger! Was a pain to get home lol

The Swiftech MCP655 modified with the EK-D5 X-TOP Rev.2. - I also cable braided the power cable in black, you can just about see the cable - was my very first attempt to cable braid, went pretty good amazingly!

The bare inside of the 800D, along with all the essentials to start sound proofing: a pair of small, blunt scissors, cello tape, a chipped ruler and a bit of paper! The wine isn't mine, if I used that as well I think it wouldn't have ended very well

Soundproofing stage, using the AKASA Paxmate Plus kit.

First I started with the plastic covers.

Then onto the door of the hot-swappable drive bay.

And finally onto the bottom shelf, which took me a very, very long time and LOTS of patiance.

Apologies for the poor pictures, I will try and get some better ones, this camera is good in light conditions, but dark conditions it isn't so good, it is a phone camera after all so I can't complain! - EDIT - Got a better camera to take the pictures now, I have updated all the pictures too .

I still have a load of sound proofing material left, but I am going to wait and see until I finish the build to see whether I need it or not, as I had the idea of putting a big sheet on the back plate of the case, but I don't want to risk distrupting the air flow, so we shall wait and see.

What fans are you going to use?

I'm looking at the AKASA apache black fans, but I am also toying with the idea of some Enermax Cluster/Everest, don't know yet .

I love these builds and the sound proofing looks mint.

Cheers, took me ages! It really is horrible, horrible stuff to cut when cutting out circles. If you want straight edges it's easy, just use scissors and it cuts like butter. It's when you try to curve the cut, or you simply want to trim away at the edge to make it straight that it becomes a pain. I like it though, adds a bit of detail and seems to brighten the case up a tad.

I’ve ordered a few new things (see list above), and I also received my XSPC RX360 radiator today, pictures below:

It came in a plain white box with a small sticker saying 'XSPC RX360'. I was expecting at least their logo... very strange, still as long as the thing works I couldn't care less!

A very nice look, not glossy or tacky, but more like a power coat.

Little confused about the 'brown stuff' in the rad, it is new... so I guess that's just normal?

Quite impressed with the quality tbh, although one thing I would point out, it scratches VERY easily. I think they need to find a paint that sticks better, it seems to scratch off far too easily, I will be taking a lot of care with it that's for sure.

Tbh the hot swappable drive bays are probably something I won't use that much, although it's nice to know it's there when you do need it. As for the cost, yeah I've had to save for quite a long time and also my student finance is paying for a lot of it.

Yup! That's about all I'll use it for too I played it not long ago after playing modern warfare 2 just to remind myself of the original... it was painful! Trust me, if you have the game in your head and you can remember it, leave it in your memories where it was good! Playing it again just ruins it

Any chance you can post your opinion on the AKASA Apache Black fans when you get them installed, i was thinking about getting a couple myself

Well, I tested them earlier, at low RPM they are dead silent, can't hear them at all. With the fan controller, if you turned it all the way down the fan actually switched off, which I thought was really cool - I'm guessing that's a feature of the fan.

It looks sleek and mean at the same time.

Once you bump up the RPM it starts to become louder, but not excessively loud. Overall I would say it's a brilliant fan.

The only 'downer' is that it uses the new 4 pin connector. This is ok for plugging into a mobo that supports it, but as for a fan controller like mine, which only has 3 pins, only some of the fan controller sockets were available as the extra pin on the connector got in the way of the capacitors on the controller. - Just something to bare in mind.

Thanks for the swift reply chap. Shame about the fan crontroller issues, i was planning to get a Zalman ZM-MFC1 Plus Black eventually to controle them all. Fingers crossed that the capacitors.

Can you not get an adapter to change a 4 pin pmw fan into a normal 3 pin one?

I think you can yes... because also bare in mind that the extension cables only allow a 3 pin connector, so the extention cables won't be compatible either. I've got the Zalman controller you want so I'll test/upload pictures for you either tonight or tomorrow. I'm revising for an exam whilst tidying my room as well with all the boxers and stuff everywhere lol If I get time I'll try for tonight though.

oh yea, didn't think about that tbh... looks like a will need a few adapters then. Thanks pal, no rush tho. I got revision to get done for the good old uni also, but i live with it seems student finance is also financing my little PC upgrade

Here is the back of the Zalman fan controller, a 4pin PWM should fit fine on any of the sockets.

If you have trouble with the extension cables you can always 'modify' them like I did...

Fittings arrived today, I have 2 more Bitspower 45 degree on order, however they aren't in stock at the moment.

Don't see what the big fuss is about Bitspower really... It is a rotary fitting with a logo on it... that's about it

I've updated the specs list, have ordered a few new things including a fan controller, as my old one broke. I have also ordered some more Akasa AK-FN058 Apache Black Super Silent 120mm Fan - 4 Pin PWM as I was very impressed with the first one I ordered.

I am away to scan the Samsung SpinPoint F3 EcoGreen 2TB for bad sectors, as well as to give it a test, I shall report back probably next year as it will take that long to scan the thing! The most I have scanned is a 640GB disk and that took half a day, I dread to think how long this one is going to take lol
