Morning Guys,

Yesterday i got all my bits through from overclockers. in all my excitement i have put it all thogether and pressed the power button being all nervous. to my suprised it fiered up 1st time :) w0o0o i thought everything was going to well.

just fired up coretemp to check what the temps where like with the standard heat sink. to find all 6 cores sat at 78-82 degrees at idel.

proccessor is i7 980x.

i took the heatsink off to check the thermal paste and there was a even thin amount covering the full cpu. put it back on fired it up again and still the same temps.

im bit worried that maybe i dont have enough thermal paste or the heast sink is not working correctly?

anybody had this issue?

Cheers Simmy

Hi and welcome to the Forums :)

Are you using the stock cooler or an aftermarket one? I would clean off the existing paste, apply fresh stuff (not too much) and reinstall the CPU cooler making sure it's attached properly. If your using the stock cooler then take care as the push/pin mounting can be awkward to get right.

thank you for the welcome.

yep its the stock cooler its massive so i thought that would be good enough to @ least keep me running around 40-50c

ive got 6 fans in the case as well so airflow shouldnt be a problem my q6600 ran at about 30 on idel and 60 maxed.

if by push/pin mounting u mean the way the it screws to the cpu? yeah that was a bit of a pain to get the screws to grip. but 100% they all screwed in tight and the cpu was locked solid and wasnt moving. i guess ill get some paste from ******s(haha at that word being filtered) on way home and try again. whats the best thing to clean the cpu with. @ work intel usually send Alcohol wipes with there new motherboards. but dont have any of them left

I normally use some Isopropyl alcohol or Acetone mate. You can get a small bottle of Acetone from a Chemist if your stuck and then use something like a glasses cleaning cloth along with it to remove the old paste.

That i7 980 is a beast of a CPU, especially when overclocked. Definately get an after market simple air cooler. Can get some very good ones for less than £40.

Fenrir EVO or the Meghalahems would be my first to choices,

Both amazing coolers (need to buy a fan for the meghala tho )

you really need an aftermarket one for a 980x .

i understand that when overclocking the cpu i will need an updated heatsink. but it should be 80c with the standard one thats just silly.

and im probs gonna get a closed loop water cooler like the hyrdo 70

when applying paste to the i7? wahts best to do? when doing it before i have just put a thin even layer coverign the cpu and i best to just stick a pea size blob in middlle?

I have always used a small blob (little smaller than a pea) on the centre of the heat spreader and allowed the cooler to spread the paste. This method has never given me any problems.

Yeah should be alright with a small blob in the middle and allowing the weight of the cooler to spread it evenly. I tend to put a few lines on the cpu and spread it with either a piece plastic like a credit card or wrap a carrier bag around my finger and spread it evenly. Used both techniques in the past with no problems. Just remember not to put too much paste on. Plenty of you tube videos on this too.

right well i found the problem it was me being super dumb!

i had an old version of core temp that just ran from a folder i was using this to pessure the temps and was getting 80c all time

i checked the bios and it said 30c i was like wtf

so downed speedfan core temp and real temp new 1's

and they all give decent temps.

now my next concern is that things are running very very cold!

to cold for a system cooled by air?

temps1.jpg

this is under 100% full load after about 10 mins max temp hit 52c and lowest temp is like 22c

this is on a standard heatsink

Those temps are fine mate ;) Glad you got it sorted but I would think about getting a decent cooler now and Overclocking the nutts off your CPU. Have a look at the Thermaltake Frio.

im just shocked at how low they are. need to do some research into overclocking as i havnt a clue really!

but i guess if i get decent cooling i could run it at around 4ghz.

just dont wanna fry a 800 quid cpu!

I know what you mean but providing you don't put too much voltage through the CPU then you can't go wrong. Your temps are great given your only using a stock cooler. Grab this little program for monitoring all of your temps in conjunction with Core Temp.

cheers will get that when i get home.

not worth trying a little oc on the standarded cooler?

if its only running 50c under 100% load.

no harm in getting it up a fewc
