Well I posted a while back about promotion within jobs.

Well the place where I work the main stock supervisor is handing his notice in on Monday has he has found a new job and now that means there will just be 2 relief supervisors and no stock supervisors so I am hoping that 1 of those relief supervisors will move up and I get the chance to mention that I would like to become one.

I've worked for the company for over one year now and have gained experience within what to do for each shift and the aim of the shift is to get the stock mostly put out.

Everytime i mention it to my manager he says wait for your apprasial, however the assistant manager left and I never got an apprasial so I really dont know what to say, that I have plans for the night team future and would like to get given the oppurtunity to become a supervisor or what.

I really would like this position and was thinking of planning tactics and solutions on how to get the job done with the work staff and the aim for each evening.

Maybe im not good enough? Anyone have any ideas.... :(

Go for it. You sound like you could do the job. No point working the same position if you feel like you are ready to progress. If your manager rejects your claim, it's not a big deal - the opportunity will arise again.

the main point to make is that either they offer you a way up the chain or you find a company that does.

Exactly. That's just what I did - and strangely enough as a stock supervisor too :) My old company passed on me for the Inventory Specialist position (idiot of an ASM wouldn't even give me an interview  ) and then I knew the Shipper/Receiver job was going to be available - but after getting passed on so humiliatingly for the other position I decided to look elsewhere. In no time I found a place looking for Stock Supervisor that offered brilliant wages and jumped at the chance ;)

Anyway, good luck!

You have nothing to lose by openly making your feelings know.
I agree.

I wouldn't say too much, just something along the lines of "...I would like to be considered for the position of xxxxxxx if the opportunity arises, thanks". I would not start telling the person why I am so good etc. It will just make them defensive if you're too pushy.

I think that, rather than wait for the job to open and possibly have it offered to someone else, you should tell the manager before the job opens - just like you said, a quite informal "Hi Dave, I just thought I'd tell you - if the role of xxx becomes available after xxx leaving, I'd be grateful if you could consider me for the role?" or something, just to make sure your name's on the table...

Yeah. I will probably give him a call tomorow to see what he says. Not sure what time to ring as the dude whos leaving isn't handing his notice in until the afternoon.

They do have promotion oppurtunitites so I am going to see what he says tomorow. :)

Im nearly 20 anyway, so I am still young and got a lot more to offer to the company.

What company is it out of interest?

Ofc you deserve the right to progress through the food chain. You show ambition so imo that counts for 95% of most jobs because it shows you realisticaly think you can do the job.

As others say, if you don't get this promotion then just look for another job. Personally, depending on your relationship with the manager, i might even be tempted to let him know you are going to look for another position.

Same company I've worked for for years. I say go for it. It is a good company to work for!

have you had a chat with your stock supervisor about what they think of you maybe doing it?

I've had a chat with him and he has said that I seem very level headed and I come across as knowing what I am doing as well.

There is already 2 relief supervisors though so maybe they might not want another one?

I will probably though give him a call tomorow afternoon or something...

surely it would make sense, and give a better impression, to talk to them in person?

Would it be better to make a phone call saying, I'd like to come in for a chat about my career?

yeah you could ask them for a bit of a chat, i suppose it really depends on how well you get on with your management. If its a good relationship then you can talk to them about it in a friendly and not-too-formal situation, if not then arrange a more formal meeting where you can give your side of the arguement as to why you should be getting that promotion you deserve.
