*** Proper 390X review & discussion thread ***

Might just have to wait a few more weeks and see if any price changes come along ive waited long enough now... I just want to be able to max or almost max anything at 1080/1200p for a couple years and then have a year or maybe two out of it after. TBH I mainly play source games and what i have now is fine but id just like to be able to play witcher, gta etc at the best they can be.

I thought i had a 7970 but ive actually got a 6970 so i presume any card will be a big upgrade.

Never thought I'd see the day Charlie turned on AMD

He's butthurt they're not giving him any ammo

If they did a complete respin and stomped the 980 by 30% across the board or whatever, he could do the thing where he turns around and says "of course I told you this here here and here" [insert links to tangentially related stories from 2011]

A half life 3 anousment can't be far off for a start it will most likely be the best selling game of all time due to anticipation, secondly Valve need IP for its vr project and a landmark game for source engine 2.

Would like to drop back to AMD for Eyefinity (NV Surround doesn't support variable resolutions).

The only problem I have at the minute with the 390 and 390x is lack of a card with multiple mini DP outputs. :(.

That's an unsubstantiated rumour afaik.

Anandtech talked to AMD themselves and they report the 390X is tweaked in some way.

I've been trying the drivers with my 290x and Firestrike is 3.1 percent faster on the 390x driver and I get 4 or 5 frames at best on some titles. I've only tried a few games and I'm comparing to bench results I took several months ago (when the Omega drivers came out).

All in all I don't think the 390x is much of an improvement. Remember that in the Hardocp review there using a 1000mhz 290x and a 1100 mhz 390x which is 50 mhz over stock clock. They also mention how it's drawing more juice than the 290x. http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/4413356/fs/5142197

Well after reading a couple of those reviews i think i will try and hold out a little longer before replacing the 6950 currently in my system.
From what ive read the 290X only offered a small improvment in performance over the 7970 i did run till it broke, and the 390x is just a 290x with double the ram and a slight speed increase on it.(not worth the extra £100 imho)
as i only game at 1920x1080p non 4k on a 27inch monitor i dont see the need for 8 gig vram. And SW:Tor and WoW i doubt use anything like that amount of Vram even at full pelt.
So hopefully the R9 Fury and R9 Fury X come in at a price point i can live with or there are some hefty price drops on the current R9 290x cards or 970's as i would like to run my games again at full spec and stay near that magic 60fps when everything is all going off at once.

If the 900 series launch was Nvidia's "Sandy Bridge" moment, sadly the 300 series launch is at best a "Devils Canyon" moment.

The Fury X cards launch tomorrow I think.

I know nobody cares but, for posterity's sake.... new silicon makes it a refresh, the word rebrand would be incorrect here. I don't think it's a matter of opinion as AMD have spoken up on the matter now which makes it factual. Previously it was only speculation.

This is a rebrand:

Got my hands on a new MSI 390x for a steal at £287 from a supplier through work (clagged it into the back of a 60k order so they did a deal on it)

Shame when it arrived the pump on the H100i cooler died so I am waiting on a new cooler before I can even test it xD

Will be replacing a 7870 card that was on its last legs.
