*** Proper 390X review & discussion thread ***

Again though they are using the 15.5 drivers for the 290x and the 15.15 for the 390x.

It seems the new drivert give a 10% to 20% boost in games so it really should be pulling well ahead.

AFAIK the 15.15 has a lot of features disabled compared to the 15.20 drivers.
Actually i'm using the modded 15.200.1040 on W7 64bit, and looking at the dll files it is newer that the 15.15. It gave my 7950 a 3% boost in firestrike tho.

what's the joke ?

"The 390 series from AMD offer great future proofing for upcoming game titles such as Star Wars Battlefront, DOOM, Half Life 3 and Fall Out 4. Featuring DirectX 12 support and 8GB of memory makes the 390 series great for current and future games at resolutions upto 4k."

Half Life 3??

So AMD did what they had to and laid out the designs they had again with the 28nm updates. Although there are no new claims for process efficiency gained, the 15% number seems reasonable but it includes both clock and power savings. AMD would not even specify which process it was on, SemiAccurate suspects it is 28HPC+. So to settle the debate, these device are all new but look to software like they are the same old same old. Actually that settles nothing, flame on forum goers.

Intredasting

Here is the 28HPC process:

I am a bit of an amd fan but I gotta say I'm not impressed at the price of these. I'd rather just get the normal 4gb 290x and overclock it and have close to 980 performance. If there was no 290x however, I'd go straight for a 980.

To be fair you are paying for the ram mainly and a small upgrade.

If your were never the type of person to buy a 290x 8gb then you wont need to buy one of these.

If you dont need 8gb buy a 290.

If you do then buy a 390.

The problem is that AMD took a few games and cranked up the memory requirements so high that they overran the 4GB buffer on the Nvidia card artificially hobbling performance. The only reason the 390X comes anywhere close to the Nvidia 980 is because it has 8GB and isn’t hamstrung by these artificial tests. In a fair fight the AMD card would be obliterated by the 980.

Never thought I'd see the day Charlie turned on AMD

So confused as to what i should go for, waited for these cards for a while now.

Stuck between a 970,390,290x,390x. I wont be upgrading for four years or so which makes me think i should go for the 390x but if its so similar to the 290x and i only game at 1920x1280 which wont change either is it really worth it :/

4 years is a long time my friend. Why not consider spending a bit more and getting a 980Ti or Fury?. Even if these cards are not viable to you, the release of the Fury should have an impact on pricing so if you choose a card that you mentioned, it has a good chance of being cheaper than it is today. Waiting just a little bit longer = winning.

The Nano? Depending on price, the Nano has the potential to be a great little card for 1080p / 1200p.
