Proper Pubs and lack of them!

The one thing I just can't undertstand about 'modern' town pubs is why they have the music so loud you can't hold a conversation with anyone. I just don't get it. I dont mean clubs that are geared towards dancing, I mean pubs meant for socialising. I love music and would want it played a good/high volume but at a level that doesnt stop you talking!

I live in a small village and there are two private pubs.

The village next to us is a bit bigger and has 5.

There are also loads in Colchester centre (off the top of my head: The Bull, Foresters, Kings Arms, Molly Malones, AnotheroneIforgotthenameof, Cambridge Arms), and that's not including all the ones on the streets surrounding it.

Plenty round here!

i'm head chef a t a'traditional' pub in a small village in North Yorkshire and the real reason the trade is dying in these places is because they cannot afford to compete with the big boys who charge £1.50 a pint etc, at my place, it's £2.97 for a pint of fosters, which for up north is quite expensive, i could go to wetherspoons/yates etc and pay nearly half that, not that i would but people go to the cheapest places, especially these days with a night out being as expensive as it is now.

No Chain Pubs at all.

We Have:

The GreyHound
The Bell
The Redlion
The Plough
The Crown (More Of A Hotel, And is bout to go bust from what I hear)
The Cue & Cushion (Local Pool And Snooker Bar)
The Locomotive

Quite a few for such a small town. Some of them are posher pubs, such as the red lion which has recently been refurbished. Has a very posh Atmosphere during the day with all office and Suited people drinking in there, but once it gets to around half 6, turns into the best pub in town.

Do you live near ilford?

Paisley has some of the best real ale pubs in Scotland, along with a pub which is frequented by Rod Stewart.... :p

I normally go out to places like Otford, Shoreham, Penshurst, Plaxtol etc with friends on a rotating designated driver scheme. Only decent "proper" pub near me is a few miles away: "The Robin Hood and Little John" in Bexleyheath. I love that place :D

I've been told we've got around 60 pubs here in Aberystwyth, the only big chain ones i can think of are a weatherspoons and varsity.

Fortunately I don't think the 'real pub' will ever die out in the countryside - I come from a small village in north somerset - it and the surrounding 5/6 villages each have a number of real pubs to choose from :)

I would say that the chains are mainly in the big cities yet even in Plymouth where I am at University- there are more pubs than 'trendy bars'... and thats including the campus area.

There's a lot to say for pubs- and I don't think people are trading them for bars, simply choosing between the two depending on what kind of night out/drink they are after.

There's 6 pubs in the high street where I live & AFAIK they are all brewery owned. The only one I go in is the Wetherspoons & TBH I'm not that impressed.
I wont go in any of the other 5, they're pretty rough IMO. :(
