Proper writing

I own a pretty expensive fountain pen but also own a pretty decent biro which i use everyday.

ditto, a fountain pen is pretty much useless for me for everyday use, as it smudges, and it's impossible to write on plasticky surfaces or blood bottles etc with a fountain pen.

If I am writing a letter though I prefer to use my fountain pen. My yr5 primary teacher used to say "Biros are the ruination of writing", and refused to let anyone use them, and it still sticks in my mind everytime i use one :p

In primary school we went from Pencil (Year R - Year 4) to Fountain pen (Year 4 - 6) then we were allowed to use biro in senior school and i never looked back.. although sometimes i think i should use it for neater writing ;)

I'm not sure it is more personal, its just more old fashioned surely. Text is more impersonal if it's heavily abbreviated, yes. I suppose it's the fact that it requires a little more effort to hand-write a letter, put it in an envelope, whack it in the post box. Is the amount of effort spent directly proporsional to the impersonality of the message?

It seems more personal. It takes more effort and the person who receives it notices that.
Emails just seem more impersonal to me. (Though, I'm not one to complain if my bf decides to send me a sweet email every now and again. :) )

i'm Dispraxic, so my writing turns out looking like turd with whatever pen i use. (probably to do with falling from about 5meters onto ym head )

however, when i used to write, i could write with a fountain pen, a Calligraphy pen, a Biro or a pencil (not a rollerball though)

i could write as fast with any of them as the others, but i use a Laptop at school now so i don't endup writing much.

i've never understood why anyone would use a fountain pen, they're just crap and inconvenient. I use hybrid gel pens exclusively now.

they're not crap at all

you use a decent (a proper one not a 99p crappy one) one for a few days and you'll see why they are infinitley better than any other sort of pen

i used one at school from when i was about 10, when i lost it i wasnt too happy i can tell you

I have a really nice fountain pen, although in general I use the bic biro's as they're easier and you can write notes at school faster with them. They also annoy me because if they roll off your desk, the nib = ruined, which has happened to this pen already. Also, in a school bag shaking around they always manage to get the bit you grip coated in ink...

They're inconvenient, but nice to use.

Another problem is they get scratchy on some of my excercise books as they were cheap paper which gave me shivers for some reason. Although, next year we just get a ringbinder and a pad.

also,

= my mate owned ^_^

I still use a fountain pen because I prefer them to biros/ball points and my writing looks nicer. However, hardly anyone I know at uni uses one, most of my friends use biros.

I've used a cartridge pen all the way through school until this last year when I started using cheap Biros. Biros are way better! Less messy and way easier to write with. :)

I dont own a fountain pen, i do however write joined up.
As i drive for a living, and am continually filling out documents, i have to print, my printing looks like a "special" person has wrote it.

HeHe so true, everytime i have to write in capitals it looks like a child with 3 fingers wrote it

Where as my normal hand writing is bang on

Decent ballpoint does me, although I own a nice fountain pen for the rare occassion that seems to need it. e.g. writing important letters :)

ninja edit: I write joined up all the time

I can only write with fountain pens, well I can write with other stuff but my writing is messy enough as it is already when I use a fountain pen that it's worse with ballpoints (my handwriting actually pwns it's just most people can't read it  ).

I WILL be using a fountain pen for Uni!1

Oh, and I use a Parker fountain pen when signing off on CAD drawings and signing letters. Generally use biros when I'm writing notes as I get through them fairly quickly (usually one a day).

I stopped using a fountain pen in high school when I started needing to write notes quickly as I would just smudge the ink and make a mess everywhere. I use a gel pen now but if I am hand writing a letter I still use my old fountain pen :).

I used to use fountain pens quite a bit, but since being in 6th form and now Uni, all i use is a bic biro. I can write far more quickly and easily, and just chuck the thing in my pocket or bag without worrying at all. All official assignments i've done for possibly the past 4/5 years have been written up on a pc anyway.

I'm a 1958 child and I had to use a real pen all through school.
However, they weren't the type with cartridges in but a balloon and you had to dip your pen in an inkwell and use a lever on the side of the pen to draw the ink up.
Since I've got a form of dyslexia which is a bit like alzheimers, I have to carry pen and pad around with me everywhere so I can remember things. I'm buggered if I lose my bits of paper.
