pros and cons please ?

Matte finish dramatically reduces glare and in my opinion offers a more natural image quality. Great for all-round use.

Gloss finish makes the screen appear brighter and more vivid. Great for movies & gaming, but be aware that you'll see obvious reflections on the screen when there's a dark background present. Some people are bothered by this, others aren't.

It can be handy to pay a visit to a shop where they have both types present & see which of the two you like best.

many thanks

thanks very helpful info ,so would you say that glossy finish is better for watching dvd ,or not a lot in it ?

Glossy screens are noticeably more vivid. So long as you're ok seeing some reflection, or intend watching in a darkened room, then yes a glossy screen for DVD playback is the way to go.

Glossy is best in a darkened room.

Glossy is God awful in daylight should the screen catch any kind of reflection and if you happen to catch a window reflection ..arrrggghhhh!

Glossy screen colour reproduction is fantastic almost lickable. :)
As for reflection they are not as bad as the images make out, which are shot to deliberately show the reflection.
as for only ok in a darkened room is an exaggeration too, as long as you don't have a strong light source behind you the you`ll get little reflection.

I owned a hazro 24wi glossy for a about a year then was replaced by a 26wi matte under warranty. I have a window behind me, and out of the two I prefer the picture quality of the glossy panel and put up with the little reflection during the day. But that's my opinion

what good screens have gloss finish as they all seem to be matt now ?

i love hte apples gloss finish but to expensive and the dells have to much problems and are matt

so which gloss have a good screen at 24" 1200 res

thanks

Good to get both sides of the debate :)

Personally i've been using the NEC 20WGX2 for the last 3 years which has a glossy screen. Mine is sat at a 90degree angle to a window and have never really had any problems with reflections. If i noticed one, i just pulled the curtain over a bit more!

At work I use a 2408 which has a matte screen and i much prefer the look of my NEC at home. I find the reflection off a matte screen to be more distracting than that of my NEC.

Just my personal opinion though!

My last monitor was a HP W2207 thought it was fantastic, that had a glossy screen.
I apparantly was a little too light handed when cleaning the screen as when my mate looked at it he grabbed a damp cloth and to my eyes looked as if he was gonna crack the screen xD Came up geat tho.

I've since sold this on and moved to 2 Dell W2409s, they have a matte finish and despite loving using that HP the matte finish is far better to me. LEss reflections, less of a dust/dirt/finger print magnet, image looks better and I think Movies look a bit better due to lack of reflections.

I wouldn't go back to a glossy screen now

Using flash for creating big diffuse reflection in matte screen and smaller specular (mirroring) reflection in glossy screen is deliberate set up because only way to get strong reflection from matte screen is by having strong light shining directly to it.
That while mirror screen makes anything in "front sector" of screen and illuminated by light in any direction to show up in it, and that includes light sources behind the screen if it just shines to your face or any light surface behind you.

Glossy screen colour reproduction is fantastic
And avoided by Eizo and NEC in all of their monitors made for serious image/video editing use...

During the day the window behind me was a problem if it was a bright sunny day, but this matte screen isn't great in that situation either. In a normally lit room as said I didn't notice the reflection enough to let it bother me.

Evening use I have lightening behind the screen, and this was never a problem.
But its all just personal opinion isn't it? and that is just mine.

That strong light shining directly to screen is situation where pretty much no screen works well...
Except very paper like electronic ink/paper which can't be used in monitors because of having very slow response time and limited colours. (and actually needs that external light source, just like paper)
