Hi,

I've hit a brick wall with going to the gym for the last 18 months, I'm quite toned but want more.

I dont do any protein and literally dont understand it. Can anyone give me advice? I'm sensitive to weight gain so dont want to put weight on, I simply want to get past the wall that I've hit

I go to the gym 3 times a week and my routine works fine I just want a bit more through using protein.

Thanks

You need to eat protein for your body to repair muscle.

You wont get fat by taking protein shakes.

I'm sure there will be someone who can explain it really well.

You may have to put weight on to lift more.

Most people go with a bulk, cut routine. You obviously can gain more muscle doing it lean, just a lot harder.

I have no idea

My diet isnt really much to go by, I eat quite a lot of chicken and tuna but other than that its just a balance diet

Cereal in the morning
Chicken wrap for lunch with fruit
Main mean is usually pasta or rice

You don't "do protein?" I suspect you do - what you actually mean is you don't supplement your protein intake with X/Y/Z.

Bottom line: if you've hit a brick wall, it's because your body can't adapt to the strain put on it by exercise as it has no building material to do work with (i.e. excess protein, fat and carbs). That's assuming you're training regime is geared for increases in strength.

You say you're "toned" which - to me - suggests you simply aren't eating enough. I'm not talking about troughing like a pig, but even just a moderate calorie surplus will help. As already pointed out, lean gains are possible but require serious dedication in terms of diet and training regime, as well as over a considerable length of time.

If yoy "have no idea" then the first step is to get one - you don't go into a new job/course/whatever and just sit then like a blancmange, do you? Look at your diet and work out where you can swap out cheap carbs (like chocolate, white bread, etc.) for low GI (glycaemic index) ones (oats, brown bread). Also, think about where you can get more lean food into your diet (protein shakes are useless without additional support from a balanced diet... your muscle cells are made up of fat, protein, carbs and water - not just PROTEIN!!!111zomg).

Second step is to put that idea into practice: get a training programme for your goals and work at it. If you're happy with your existing programme, then fine, but it may want tweaking if you're hitting a brick wall.

You want more but don't want to put weight on? Pick one, you can't have both.

When I say weight I mean fat

mrthingy that is why I asked the question, it is a forum that is the point of the forum, to ask for advice and discuss topics. Otherwise, thanks for the advice.

'using', 'do', 'on' ... Its not a drug!

You said your workout is fine, yet you're not progessing, do you mean just in terms of definition, or size, strength power etc.

As said look at your diet see what you can change, add in supplements if you need to. But I have a feeling that its definition that you want more of and if that's the case then your routine isn't as fine as you think it is.

You'll almost certainly put on a small amount of fat unless you're completely and utterly perfect with your calculations of requirements. And you'll gain very very slowly like that anyway.

You'll lose the fat quickly enough anyways.

Oh, don't worry - if I felt offended by your question, I wouldn't have bothered responding. The fact that you're asking shows that you want to do something about it.

So good work! :)

You don't want weight gain, but want to get past the brick wall? I presume when you say you want 'more' you mean some size.

I hate to break it to you, but this will inevitably mean weight gain :p

I written the post in a bit of a hurry its amazing how pedantic some people are!

Thanks for the advice, the mistake I have made here is I thought this would be a lot easier than it actually is, I literally thought it would be a case of "take this stuff twice on training day" and thats it :o

More reading is required on my part

Post up your exact diet, including quantities, and also the routine your doing, including sets, reps and weights.

Progress is either going to be limited by diet, training or rest.

I'm gonna guess mostly diet, but probably a little of all three. 18 months is a seriously long time to drift along making zero progress.
