Good record at the moment on predictions, although predictable :)

Blu-ray winning HD-DVD, knew the outcome as soon as they were announced.
3DTV will never take off.

PS Vita, why it will fail, even less sales than PSP.

  • Too big to carry around comfortably.
  • Core games what it's designed for are too in-depth for on the move gaming
  • Competition with iPhone and Android gaming ( touchscreen games can get a similar experience with Mobile devices )
  • PSP never had device competition such as iPhone/Android which will get closer to Vita spec every year.
It will drop like a rock, If I was a developer, no way would I make games for this. Especially full priced ones at £35 /game. Will take the same amount of resources as 360/PS3 , if they want the full experience on the move.

Umm I thought sales for 3D Tv where better than expected, and because of financial things the market as a whole was slowing.

As an iPhone 4s and iPad 2 owner I can safely say the games are balls, fair enough they make loads of money but it's all casual nonsense.

Pretty much, and I'm a Galaxy S II owner, typing this on an iPad 2. Sure GTA3 is pretty good but the control scheme is awkward at best. The kind of people that the console-selling games and franchises are aimed at, are not the same people who are quite content with playing Plants v Zombies while waiting for a bus.

All of this nonsense about handheld gaming being dead, is just that. Considering the 3DS has supposedly been a failure thus far, it hasn't exactly done shabbily has it? The Vita has hardly been out for the blink of an eye, there aren't any/many FANTASTIC games for it yet and there isn't really any game which takes advantage of all the features. It's quite frankly ridiculous trying to predict the outcome of the Vita only a month or two after the launch in one country where there aren't even any decent pieces of software out on it yet.

Didn't Nintendo say that the 3DS was either the fastest selling, or the highest preordered console that they'd ever made? Bear in mind that was with a fairly weak launch line up and probably quite a few people believing it was a minor upgrade to the DS rather than a new generation of hardware entirely.

Dedicated handheld consoles are nowhere near extinction, they're as alive as ever.

The PSP actually hasn't done that badly overall, it didn't beat the DS, but it still did well.

I wouldn't say mobile devices such as the iphone and tablets provide a similar experience when gaming and I don't think i'm in the minority when I say that either. Buttons will always trump a touch screen device and the games are marketed for different groups. Mobile devices only tend to have games to stop you getting bored on a lunchbreak, theres no depth or immersion to them.

You could say that a larger screen tablet provides more screen to play with and thus the fingers blocking the screen argument is null. But...... you have the increased price to factor in and the fact that its just not as portable.

The only way iphones and the like will ever challenge stuff like the 3ds and vita is by having a separate control system, I love my iphone, but the games that I play on it all require a single push of the screen, or swipe anything with a convoluted control system is simply lost on me.

Vita wont fail, no Sony console ever has and this wont.

OMG Do you know the future and stuff noes!! >.<

Yes it might but i doubt it will 3DS was "Failing" at one stage according to many people and well turns out it isnt, I suspect Vita will follow same pattern over all it will be a success.

Ill still keep my pre-order as it looks bloody awesome far nicer kit than iphone etc and my 3DS (I Still enjoy my 3DS)

Iphone/Smartphone etc they all target casualness of games abit like the wii really so even if i have a spare 10mins i dont find a game on them i want to play rather do 10mins on wipeout or something similiar.

For you to just shun the Vita and say it's going to fail is pure stupidity. You can have your opinions but you are in no way talking for the masses. I know plenty of people who still use their PSP.

Vita is marketed towards the older gamer. I just can't see people of my target bracket wanting to haul that thing around as well as a phone.

Yes phones don't offer the same kind of experience as Vita, but on the move, I really think the casual touchscreen games like Trials which only cost a few pounds are good enough for people.

I myself bought a PSP, didn't really use it that much. Now I have a phone with casual gaming there is no way I'll buy Vita.

Surely we will only know this for certain when a Monster Hunter game is released and Japan and it fails to spark interest?

The size is great as far as I am concerned, good size screen, comfortable to hold etc, however I guess I may not use it as other would, I would almost never be planning to have it on me at all times so I can play games "on the go".

For me its more that its thrown in a bag for when I am away with work, maybe travelling on a plane / train (otherwise I would be driving everywhere else and I don't think I can drive and play psp at the same time), play when the other half is controlling the tv etc

Either way I'm fairly sure I will be grabbing one of these as soon as I can, unfortunatly I am away with work from the 6th feb until the 23rd would have been perfect for that, will just have to wait till I get home.

I personally don't think it's going to be quite as successful as they'd like.

The market for it in my opinion is children and teens. I know a few people have said adults, but I'm not inclined to agree with that. Reason being is that many now have a phone capable of doing decent gaming, further to that it's got interest access, a camera and it's your personal assistant. Most adults don't want to carry around another device with them. I own a DS and a PSP and I never bother taking them with me. I'm quite happy to play an iPhone game on the train, I'd then rather play on a console when I'm actually home.

I also feel you can't compare the market with previous handheld sales. The DS was a huge seller because it predated smart phone app stores, it also had games that appealed to older generations like Brain Training and Sudoku. It's a lot like the Wii though, many adults who never played games bought one, but they've not necessarily continued playing it.

It's very similar to how it's going to be interesting to see if Nintendo can convince everyone who bought a Wii to now buy a Wii-U.

Vita wont fail, no Sony console ever has and this wont.

Are you sure about that? The PSP Go was the biggest failure ever and Sony have not learnt from that since the Vita is very similar. Users who want to play their old UMD games will have to buy them again, the cost of the console is expected to be well over £200 and the for a top end 32GB memory card they want another £100 on top!

The 3DS has done pretty well for the most part since people are moving to that instead of buying the Vita.

As someone who spends quite of free time playing video games, I couldn't be less interested in a portable console. Unless you are commuting for well over an hour day and are just sitting around whilst doing so, what's the point? Much better to play a game on a console or pc! Even then, as if listening to music isn't enough on a journey.

I imagine most gamers feel the same these days.
